Along with canning, I bake for my local farmers' market each week, so I practically live in the kitchen. I used to watch/listen to Food Network in there. But I recently invested in a cheap little DVD player, and now I can watch movies while I do my food projects. Of course, right now, I am working my way through all the seasons of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer.' I'm up to the beginning of Season Six. haven't really watched many music videos since the early 80's on mtv... don't remember many either!! even tho i wasn't a michael jackson fan, i seem to remember some of his videos most(thriller, billy jean, etc)maybe they played them alot??? also remember a couple of genesis videos...(misunderstanding in particular) my kids showed me one a couple of years ago which was very cool (don't know if it was FF) that had the band in protective clothes and googles and it was a whole series of ball/s (i think)going on a mousetrap like course and ended with colorful paint getting dumped on all of them... very clever... i don't have time to search for it, but does it ring a bell with anyone?? it's a worthwhile view!!

To receive over the air broadcasts, you will need to buy an antenna, just like in the 60's. Visit antennaweb.org for advice about which antenna is best for your location -- you may need one with an amplifier. My TV can get only one local station with its internal antenna -- to see more I would have to buy an external one too. You can also visit the major networks' websites and watch many of their shows for free. For example, I am always at work when my favorite shows are on and I don't have a DVR so I watch later on PBS's and TNT's websites. It is possible to connect your computer to your TV, either with an HDMI cable or RCA cables, to see the video on the TV screen instead of your computer's monitor. Another option that costs $ is to subscribe to a service like Netflix, where you can see many (but not all) TV shows as well as movies. And, if you want to see the local station's news shows, they also have websites where you can usually see the broadcast live, or watch segments later. The TV tuner that hooks to your computer can't unscramble a scrambled signal from your cable outlet. I have used one to try to record a program with my laptop and was able to see most of my basic cable channels by hooking the cable/internet outlet to the tuner which then plugged into my laptop. As I recall I had to really search to find the active channels, the channel numbers for the tuner didn't correspond to the channel numbers of the cable company. The difference may be that I was still paying for cable -- so I could receive the channels -- while you are not. I don't know if cable TV content is still accessible via the cable if you have a Comcast internet access subscription but not cable TV-- I doubt it.

Oh, how could I forget Sara Moulton, Alton Brown and the 2 Fat Ladies! Sara comes across as sincere, down to earth and neighbor-like. I like her cooking style but not a lot of her recipes. Alton Brown and the Two Fat Ladies have very few recipes I'd want to try, but find the shows very entertaining and often informative. Dotmom, Justin Wilson was at one of the sports shows many many years back and a friend and I went to wander around and of course see his show. Well, as it turned out he had JUST left the show as we got in there and wouldn't be back for about quite a few hours. I thought he'd at least be out signing autographs or something but that wasn't the case. We wandered around and waited. Debated about how long to stay but finally gave up. That close. About the only person I've really wanted to see in person. Thought it would be interesting to talk to him a few minutes if it was allowed. Sadly he's gone, but a few of his shows are on YouTube. The ones I saw on there I remember watching. Justin's measuring salt in his hand, throw in a little extra - just shows it's not a science. I got to the point I could smell something and tell if it needed salt. Some friends laughed at me when I measured with my hand and I said If Justin can do it, so can I and they said yeah right, so I took a measuring spoon and poured it in. 1 teaspoon exactly. He also got me using fresh ground pepper on garlic bread. And it are good, I garontee! I have a couple of his cookbooks. Received them as gifts. Not that I really needed them because I copied down a lot of his recipes that interested me. I still use them as a base for others. I just modify to suit my tastes. As a cook should. And I enjoyed his speech. Sort of a Cajun Norm Crosby. And unlike so many, he poked fun at himself rather than feigning offense at every opportunity. Refreshing. And the Two Fat Ladies were fun to watch. It was so obvious they didn't get along. Not sure how they got paired up. They'd snip at each other occasionally and was entertaining. I also like the way ALton Brown interjects some humor and, like America's Test Kitchen, include some of the science and why, for example, some cookies are soft and some are crunchy. One other I forgot is Nathalie Dupree. Again, the older shows were so far superior to those of today (and Alton & 2FL are old shows IMO)
