San Angelo ISD School Bus Here

I live several hundred miles away from San Angelo, Texas where the FDLS Compound raid took place. Today, on a trip to my town, there was a San Angelo ISD School Bus at the gas station off of I-10.

I don't think that I've heard that they are sending Children to Houston. So, I'm thinking they are using the Bus to transport Lawyers to San Angelo. I couldn't see inside the bus.

Gayle-I heard last night on the local news (Midland/Odessa) that they are sending some of the boys to a detention center for boys somewhere in TX.Do they have one close to you? I wondered why a detention center.Looks like that might not be a good thing. It's a sad situation for all of those kids.Wonder why they would be transporting them in a school bus?
Maybe the SA ISD school bus was for a sports team instead.Maybe a tournament of some kind?

No, this was definately San Angelo ISD. There are several Ranch Type of Retreats around here, but I don't know of a dentention center. My small town has a Religious Retreat here.

San Juan Islands WA trip advice?

We've been out there twice in the summer and it's not been crowded. The first time we were there we were doing a trip along the coast eventually leading to a wedding in the wine country outside San Francisco. We flew into Seattle and stayed at the Inn at the Market which is a really nice boutique hotel up the street from Pike Place Market. They have a rooftop deck where you can bring your drinks and watch the ferries come in and out. I highly recommend that hotel. It's within walking distance to restaurants too. We only did an overnight at Friday Harbor and stayed in a Bed and Breakfast which I didn't care for because it was in a private home and the owners were on hand. We went on a whale watch and saw orcas which was fun. I love the ferry system in Washington and we were able to take our rental car everywhere. I think on that trip we just went to Friday Harbor before turning around and going back along the coast to CA. A couple of years ago we were out there again for a wedding near Bellingham, WA. This time we flew into Seattle again and since we arrived late and were skipping Seattle this time, we stayed at a hotel across from the airport. The hotel had a van that picked us up at the airport and the next morning took us to the rental car place down the road. It's cheaper if you pick up your car outside the airport so we did that this time. I think from there we went to Port Townsend so my husband could see the Wooden Boat School. We stayed in a cottage belonging to a B&B and that was nice and private. I remember spending a couple of days hopping on ferries and I think they're was another town we stayed in overnight to catch a ferry the next morning. I forget the name of it though. We had reservations for the ferries because we wanted to be sure there was room for our car. We also went to Victoria and stayed in a beautiful Inn ( Prior House Inn )outside of town. We stayed in the room with the king bed in the Hobbit Garden Studios with our own entrance which was really nice. Their garden was absolutely beautiful. The breakfasts were nice and we really loved staying there. From there we went to Vancouver and stayed downtown at the Wedgewood Hotel. The hotel and the restaurant attached were very nice, but I've learned since that the beautiful part of Vancouver with spectacular scenery is at the northern end. Next time. We did have a long wait getting through the checkpoint back into the states from there.

What do you remember from your high school prom?

Our school had a junior-senior prom. It was a small school so I guess they needed two classes to fill the Elks Club ballroom. Don't remember my gown or date my junior year. I'd have to get out the yearbook--wherever it is. :0 My senior year I was dating a guy from the next town. I was very small and we had a terrible time finding a gown to fit. I don't know why my mother didn't make it. She always made our clothes. About a month before prom, mother and daddy went to Columbus, Ohio to visit my aunt and uncle and mother found the prettiest dress. It was a size 3 and she had to alter it. It was short, dusty rose organdy with spaghetti straps (nothing to hold up a topless gown). Across the bodice was a row if deep rose and dusty rose organdy flowers that could be removed (I kept them). I loved that dress! My date brought me a corsage of pink baby roses with babies breath that I pressed and kept for years. After the prom ended at midnight (a treat for all of us to be up that late back then), the Seniors had an all-night party. It was also at the Elks Club. We all changed into bermuda shorts, which were the new hot thing, and danced, played games and ate until about 5 when they served us breakfast. It was a lot of fun and emotional because we were graduating and sure we'd never see each other again. You know how emotional HS girls can be. A lot of kids in my class ended up back in R-ville. Nice little town to raise a family. It'll be 50 years next month since that prom night. Sure wish I was going to the reunion in June!

Wow, you do have a tricky one. Unfortunately, it's most likely not going to easy to find a town within commuting distance of the kind of major city you are looking for where you can build such an "unusual" (ultra-green/chemical-free building is b*tch expensive) structure on that budget. Maybe Midwestern cities like St Louis or Kansas City where an hour out of the city you're dodging cows. (Or that was the case when I lived in central MO, although that was - man, I'm getting old - almost 15 years ago.) I can tell you it's pretty much Not Gonna Happen near Boston or NYC. I live an hour outside of Boston and a half-decent building lot by itself is almost your entire budget, forget your site work, bringing utilities in, etc., before even getting the house framed you're well over budget. But one phrase jumps out at me: "young scientists working in academia" - aren't there quite a few big universities that are NOT in major metro areas? Two that come to mind are University of Wisconsin in Madison WI and Purdue University in West Lafayette IN (which is far enough "out there" that cheap land/homes should be feasible). Consider private schools as an option for your children as well - this may open up some more locations where the jobs are available, the land is available, the neighborhoods are to your liking, but the schools aren't quite up to par. I do have to ask, though, have you considered an older existing house with minimal restoration/modernization? Materials 75-100 years old would have done all their offgassing decades ago, and the materials used would have been less likely to offgas in the first place anyway - no plastics, no plywood and particleboard, etc. Then you can do the needed restoration using safe materials. There are lovely houses in the suburbs and exurbs of Midwestern cities that would be WELL within your budget even accounting for some immediate restoration costs. I think you do have one idea that is totally erroneous - most Americans don't have anyone to help them out with down payments either!

I'll ignore your childish name calling. For the benefit of others, if you want to compare schools, take a look at the annual US News rankings. It's not without its critics, and there are shortcomings in its methodology, but it provides one set of measures/assessments that can be used as an indication. Those engaged in looking at college choices for accomplished students know or can access what the Top 25 colleges are with this or other sources. The US News report is really more interesting and useful for most people when looking at public institutions and also looking at the middle of the ranges to see whether a particular school of interest is viewed as more or less accomplished compared to its similar peers and alternative choices. Those ranked near the bottom are usually there for good reasons and tend to stay low on the lists year after year. To do your own quick look, consider the following data points in comparing schools. This info is readily available (including from the US News site): Acceptance rate - lower is better. It suggests the school is in demand but they're picky about who they want. Does the school take all applicants or is acceptance selective? Schools with higher acceptance rates arguably have diluted talent pools and less capable students, overall. That can adversely affect the educational experience for more capable students. As an example but not the only one, take a look at the traditionally very large Big 10 and similar schools. The ones that are state institutions with very high acceptance rates. Most of these schools have Honors colleges or Honors programs so that the better students can have more advanced courses and more capable peer groups in their classes, as would be the case at a school with more selective admissions. Retention rate- How many freshmen return for the sophomore year. Higher is better. Graduation rate - What percentage of incoming freshmen complete their degrees within 4 or 6 years. Higher is better. While life happens and some students choose or need to drop out or discontinue their studies, lower percentages suggests admittance of students not capable of completing a degree program. Or, schools offering less than stellar programs that fail to complete an educational cycle with the vast majority of its existing students.

Gayle-I think the SA ISD bus you saw must have been transporting school kids somewhere.Probably a sports tournament of some kind.I don't think they are sending any of the kids from SA to any other part of the state.I don't know why they would since they are all being housed in the SA coliseum at this time.I just don't see that there would be a need to send them any where else, even for fostering, until they get all the mess with the paternity thing straightened out,and that could take weeks. In all the news that I have seen everyone was being transported by State buses that look like a Greyhound bus.

I thought I heard on the news earlier that they are sending some if the kids to Montgomery County, maybe to Boys and Girls Country, that's the only one I know of in Montgomery County.

The news just said children are being sent to places from Amarillo to south Texas, such as Abiline, Austin and Waxahachie. Porter, north of Houston where my DD lives, has a youth camp that some children are going to.

Some are going to Boys and Girls Country in Hockley, Texas, which is about 50 miles from my House. Some are also going to Liverpool, Texas to a Childrens Home. They will be placed in Foster Care after Thursday.

They are arriving in white buses not the School Buses that I saw earlier.

Some are going to Waxahachie, and my DD#2 is an educational diagnostician and thinks she will be asked to help test these kids, as they think they will have lots of problems.

I "think" some have been sent to our Boys Ranch right down the road from us (literally) about 20-30 miles. It's the one closest to Amarillo.

Saying prayers for those kids, and their families too. This is so hard, all the way around. A totally new social existence - some at the age when even the more traditionally raised kids have difficulty with learning to adjust to growing into adulthood. The parents are probably devastated too. While I don't agree with their lifestyle, it was the only life many of them knew - it was their reality. Such an abrupt change and losing their kids at the same time. Sadly, it will probably get ugly because of the judicial calamity yet to come. Pretty tough... all the way around.
