What you can do with scraps

Due to the fact that some are playing with their scraps, I thought we could show what we've made with our scraps, squares and strips. Chinese Coins is good for strips (I'm working on one now but it didn't come from scraps) and I love this one using 1 1/2" squares....most of them started as 1 1/2" strips which made it easier.

Ok, ladies, let's see what you've done with your itty bitty scraps. @:)

You are so creative. It's lovely but I seldom save scraps that small. I take scrap material and cut them in 2-1/2 strips but seldom smaller. I've yet to use those strips but will some day maybe. I'll save a bag full of smaller stuff for anyone that wants them. LOL

I applique a lot, so I save everything! And there are a few on this board who will tell you (gladly, probably:) all about how I even dumpster dive for other people's leftovers! [And I have used many of those pieces already - nothing goes to waste!]
I also have made a few Irish Chain quilts using strips as small as 2". I currently am making a postage stamp quilt - & have had people from all over send me 'stamps'. They are 1 1/2" squares. One of these days I'll read up again on how to post pics on this site ---- & I'll post pics of a few of the scrappy quilts.

How about using them to grow hydroponic veggies? here is a post that someone had made where they thought of using a gutter: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/hydro/msg0218110910566.html I've experimented with a timer where I had flood a chamber for 30 mins and then emptied it out for 30 mins which (i guess) can give you a little different perspective on using a Nutrient Film Technique with the gutter. I did this using a cheap timer that I had obtained from home depot and it worked wonderfully. I didn't use a gutter so I don't know about the issues with the gutter being too flexible... etc... Perhaps with proper support you could get around this but then again the PVC might wind up being cheaper than buying the materials needed for supporting the gutter.

Eat more vegetables! :D I have asked grocery stores for trimmings from their produce department but their policies vary and some will not share. One winter we collected coffee grounds from a local coffee shop at the rate of several large totes a week. We have driven around in the fall prior to large garbage pick up when people have bags of leaves at the curb and gotten many bags that way. I pick up horse manure from my pasture and have also gotten a trailer load of barn cleanings from a local riding stable. Unfortunately a local composting business now gets it. You might check if Asplundh does brush clearing in your area as there is a possibility of getting a truck load of freshly mulched small trees. Depending on where you live it could be less expensive for them to deliver a truck load than to take it to the landfill. For small amounts of kitchen trimmings I recommend trench composting as it feeds the worms who multiply and produce a lot of castings. Much more beneficial than spending time composting when one is not able to find enough to compost.

I am just one person but am a vegan and so everything I eat the wormies can eat. I put my stuff through a food processor and can fill two quart size mason jars a week. I put those jars in the fridge and by the time the wormies get it the stuff is about two to three weeks old so they scarf it up. Currently my bin has almost two pounds of worms in it so they're not quite eating the two jars a week, but they're getting close. I have found that it really doesn't take that much time and effort to run everything through the processor, plus it takes up so little space like that. And I never have to worry about some one mistaking it for actual food just from the way it looks. I do gather scraps during the week in a container in the fridge and process that stuff maybe once or twice during the week.

You can make Peterson bluebird boxes using 2 x 4's, but its not entirely from 2 x 4, you will have to purchase or find plywood or other material for the larger dimensions. There are a number of angled cuts required, i had a friend who was into woodworking to help me build a few of the boxes. Here is a link that might be useful: peterson nestbox plan

Sharon, your quilt is lovely! The black & white QSTs set off the bright squares perfectly.

I am working on the Quiltville mystery; it will be at least queen size when done and I have used all fabric from my stash, mostly small pieces left over from other things. I'll post pictures when I get enough put together to look like something!

I'm also working on a patches & pinwheels similar to Sharon's; it's all scraps, too. And I'm working on an ocean waves that is all scraps.

Last year I made about 25 or 30 miniature quilts for my guild's silent auction and the Alz Art Quilt Initiative; they were all from scraps, too.

TG!!! I cannot believe you've not done anything with your 2 1/2" strips! Aren't they the size of what they call Noodles? You probably better watch out or quiltpartner will be stopping by with a U-Haul for your smaller scraps. LOL

QP, I've often wondered how, when making a Postage Stamp quilt, you can keep track of the squares so you don't have 2 the same. How do you do that?

Donna, Scraps sure help with making miniatures. I used to subscribe to that magazine...loved looking at the pictures but never did anything. I think making Dear Jane squares is pretty much miniature..which is probably why I'm at a standstill.

This past summer I dug out all my scraps and decided to sort/cut them. I made tumblers from some, and 2" squares plus a host of other shapes. I eventually put most of them together for our guild charity quilt projects. No pictures as they were given to the guild. I try to cut my small pieces right away when working on larger projects and have similar sizes/shapes bagged together, thus making it easier to get a project going. I planned to reduce the stash a bit,and I feel I hardly put a dent in it!

DH bought me an Accuquilt Go for Christmas. I plan to use it to cut my scraps and sort them by color and shape. I bought the 6" tumbler die and plan to cut the larger scraps with it.

Teresa, I love all your scrappy quilts!

Barbara, your system sounds very much like Bonnie Hunter's (Quiltville). I'm not that organized yet, but at least my scraps are organized by color! :)

So far I have about 1500 or so 'stamps' for my quilt. (some are actually assembled!! Woo hoo!!) When people send me stamps, they usually send 50 all different. I'm not aware of a good way to keep track of duplicates (if anyone out there does, I'm all ears!!) But so far I've not had any -duplicates, that is. Not sure how, but I have a good memory when it comes to fabrics. I can still tell any fabric that we carried in my shop - & it was 2 yrs ago we closed. (open for 7 yrs) Wish I could remember faces, appointments, birthdays, etc that well! lol And for those times I leave my grocery list on the kitchen counter, I sure wish I could remember what was on it!!

Oh well, I just chalk it up to the fact that I LOVE~Cindy

I made this one years ago. I was still very much a novice so there were plenty of mistakes but it is one of my favorites because of the scraps/black and white look.

Thank you for the inspiration. I got my scraps sorted by color and have been thinking about what to do with them. I just don't see myself cutting that many little squares, rectangles, or strips. My skills are not such that I could sew them together and have lovely matching seams. Or I may just be impatient....:). After reading this post and then seeing the post on log cabins, I now think I can make log cabin blocks out of my scraps. I even took a class once on paper piecing log cabins....the memory is just not what it used to be....forgot all about that pattern. But I have the instructions and template.
With another big snow here in the south, I could probably finish a quilt. LOL
This forum is just wonderful and I am delighted that you let me play....

Teresa, I don't remember seeing your triangle quilt before. I really like it! You inspired me to use scraps a few years ago when you did a scrap class here on the forum.

Barbara, Our scrap bins overfloweth no matter how much planning we do. Isn't it fun?!

Linda OH, Have fun with your new toy. We expect to see some shapely quilts. lol

Donna, I'm not as organized as Bonnie either....but it's fun to try. @:)

Cindy, How awesome to be able to remember fabric the way you do! I'm thinking that by looking at our fabric a lot gives us that ability and we don't even know it...at least to a certain extent!

day2day, One of the things I like when using scraps is to use a focus fabric to help pull the quilt together. You did that very nicely, even as a novice! Nice job!!!

Murphy, That's what this forum is all about....inspiration and support! Log Cabins only need light and dark strips and you're good to go! Do a Google image search on scrappy log cabin quilts and you'll get a ton of ideas. Most importantly, enjoy!

SharonG, can you give me more info on your scrap quilt in the first post? Did you do strip piecing or make 9-patch blocks? Did you use solids or read-as-solid fabrics? Is the black a solid?

Teresa, The squares finish at 1"..some of them were 1 1/2" squares and some were sewn together in strips...not longer than 7". These were done as the spirit moved not all at once. But, the more I made the more excited I got about it. I did enjoy making this one. The colors are 'read as' not solids. What you might be seeing as black is a very dark TOT green with WOW for the hourglass block. Unfinished blocks trimmed to 6 1/2" and finished at 6" then just add whatever you want for borders. Hope this helps. If you need more info, just ask as I still have the top here waiting to be finished. @:)

Jayne, loved your samples and the black or dark blue makes everything just pop out!I have just recently begun to use some black in my scrappy quilts and I love the way it really adds excitement to the quilts.

Jayne, All your quilts are great! I really like what you did with the crumb/crazy quilt blocks! Great idea....I might just use it if you don't mind. I'd forgotten about the Crazy quilt blocks I have....somewhere. The one with a blue border makes me think of a cozy cabin somewhere in the mountains with a fireplace. @:) I might just have to sew some of my strips together along with the squares and make one!

So many quilts.....too little time....and energy. @:(

Beautiful quilts!!!! I did not care for scrappy at all until I saw all of the gorgeous quilts on this forum!!!!!
I use 1&1/2x1&1/2 for headers and enders.The smalllest I will save is 1x1.
This scrappy Irish chain was a 'controlled' scrappy using 2x2.

This one is on going and I am using 1&1/2x1&1/2 of ANYTHING lol!!!

We have a son in Australia who does not get home but once every 7-10 years. To keep him in the "family loop", his quilt is a braid pattern and uses scraps from all the quilts of his siblings and nieces and nephews. It was well received.

Rosa, I think your controlled scrappy looks awesome! Not like a scrap quilt at all. Your anything goes quilt is nice and colorful!
