this will be my first try at making a quilt

I am not a quilter.. but my neices' grandmother made her a baby quilt for her baby that is due in Feb.She passed away about two months ago.but finished it before she did. She did it all by hand, except.. she use a fabric with little squares of baby pattern type of fabric. she hand stitched around each littlw square and did all the other quilting by hand also.. I would like to try and make a quilt like this only I want to use my sewing machine to quilt it. what kind of batting should I use and what is the best fabric to use on the back side?? I know these are kind of dumb questions for you wonderful quilters, but I just wanted to try and make something like this one for my newphew and his new baby girl.

I usually use warm and natural in all my quilts. But I think there are some other battings that may be softer. You might want to think of using Minky for the backing and no batting in the middle. Minky is very soft and you see it in many baby blankets. I have never used it but I've heard it is great for baby blankets. Maybe you could go to a baby store and check out the ready made ones and see what's what (regarding the minky). Hope this is not too confusing.

Hi HuggyB & Welcome,

These aren't dumb questions, pls. don't put yourself down like that. We were all newbies once, even if for some of us it was a long time ago.

I think 'warm & natural' mentioned above MAY be a brand of batting.

If you have a local quilt store, pls. try to talk w/ them.

I'm on my 2nd baby quilt, I just use all cotton, front & back (fancy printed cottons, but still) & a Polyfill batting which is washable. The key is that all of this should be washable & dryable since it's for use of a baby.

I've read Minky is not weasy to sew, perhaps that's not best for a first timer.

I think the key here may be the simpler the better.

Yeah Robbi! That was one of my biggest hurdles to get over - I put off even trying to FMQ for many years and then once I did it, I wondered why I had made it so big in my head. I'm not very good at it, but I do enjoy it which is so much better than dreading it! Karlene

Wow, Donna! You need to rename yourself "miraclequilter"! What a horrible experience that must have been. My sister-in-law had a similar incident a few years ago and survived it, but needed 3 surgeries on her face/eye to repair the damage. You are one lucky quilter! Your quilt is adorable and it looks like you've done a great job. Don't feel badly about not having time to get to everything; I work full time too and have to get my quilting done in spurts, whenever I can steal time from something else that needs to be done. Thanks guys.. I am just going to jump in and ask the fabric store and get started.. I do not have the patience to do sew all the little pieces together like most quilters do.. so I thought I could do one like my neices' grandmother did only I will use the sewing machine instead of sewing by hand.. what the heck if I do not try.. I will never know... right??/ so off I go to the fabric store..

This sounds like a very do-able project! There just so happens to be a fabric out there I really like along these lines--a couple of people are selling it on ebay at the moment. I'll put the link below just in case you like it, too.

I'm just finishing a baby blanket that I used Quilter's Dream Wool to make. I chose it because wool is naturally flame retardant, but the Warm company also sells a batting called Warm and Safe that's flame retardant (and might cause less concern on wash day about using hot water.) It comes down to a personal choice.

Petal, I really like that fabric too, oh now choices.. to make.. darn.. Okay.. I will do this.. trust me.. LOL I just may have to make two quilts..
