Vision Cookware

In the act of de-cluttering my neighbour's apartment, her daughter gave me 2 Vision cookware pots of her mom's.

I now have a smooth-top stove, and reading the manual, it said that glass and ceramic are not recommended because of poor conduction. I thought glass would have been great to use on the stove. Does anyone use it, and do you like it?

My cookware which is cuisinart has such a high conduction that I have trouble simmering rice low enough. It boils over on minimum. So I thought the Visions would be nice for that kind of thing.

I have some Vision cookware, but don't have a smooth-top stove. The link below from the Cleaning Forum doesn't recommend using the Vision on your type stove.

I used to have a set of Visions, I think I used it 3 times before it went to Goodwill.

Any cookware going into the Advantium has to be able to turn on the turntable. I measured the white tray, which is the biggest tray supplied & what the microwave function uses, and it is exactly 13" in diameter. I don't think you could safely go bigger than that.

I had the original Cuisinarrt stainless pans with wood handles. They were great and I've cooked with them for 30 years, including a gas range (not sure of the brand, but maybe a GE or Whirlpool) and a Dacor gas cooktop. When we changed out the yucko electric cooktop for the Wolf in this kithen, we found that the pans were okay, but we have been replacing piece by piece with some All Clad (stainless is my favorite, but LTD or the others are good too). I also have some Calphalon that works well and bought a Cuisinart Multi-clad saucepan to try (at Marchall's for about half the price). I like all three of these brands, but the layered bottom of the origial Cuisinart pans (still in the Cuisinart other than the Multi-clad and many other brands) tends to give you hot spots along the sides of that bottom where you lose the layering. If you have a higher powered gas range, I think you might find that the multi layered pans will work well for saucepans, stockpots and skillets, but you may want some specialized pieces in something different -- a nonstick skillet for eggs, possibly cast iron for certain things -- frying, chili pot, griddle -- a wok. You get the idea.

Weed, There are two tricks to cooking with stainless steel cooking surfaces that will optimize the performance. First, always preheat the pan to the temperature you want to cook at and at the same setting, i.e. don't try to hurry this process by pre-heating the pan on high. Then preheat the oil. This will make foods stick less, release better, and let you get a good fond. Second, keep the cooking surface scrupulously clean. This is easy if you wait until the pan is warm until you wash it and finish with a little Barkeepers Friend applied with a paper towel, rinse thoroughly, and hand dry the pan. Any residue left on a SS surface will make food stick and progressively harder to get off with each use. It only takes an extra minute or so per pan to keep them really clean and it's worth the little bit of effort required.

johnliu: It heats more at the center than the edges like a small round teppan grill, but that can work to your advantage when you're making a roux. You can spiral the cooked part to the edge and then pull in the less cooked stuff. When you boil water, the bubbles rise from all over the bottom. seagrass: World Kitchen, who took over the housewares division of Corning, Inc. never discontinued the Visions line but for a time they substituted imported stoneware for Pyroceram and sold it under the "CorningWare" name. The public wasn't fooled and in 2008 they brought back Pyroceram. It's all at their online store (link below) and in their factory stores around the country. It will go in the garage sale. As far as not using because of scratching, I wasn't worrying about that. I am very careful, and use my cast-iron skillet on the stove with no problem.

My stove has the speckled surface, which I highly recommend. The glossy black would show every little scratch and mark, and dust! That's why I had no interest in wanting a smooth-top. Every one I've seen except Mom's which still looks like the day they bought it (it's all white), looked like heck. Dirty, fingerprints, dusty, yuck.

I have a nice big skillet made of it and I like to bake in it sometimes. I have some other pieces but have not used them in a long time so they are in the club house. Both places have the smooth top range.

I had a few pieces (saucepans) but rarely used them on my gas stove.Very similar to Corning Ware. I donated them long ago due to uneven heating,things burned. Yes, not recommended. Very pretty. Use them now as plant pot water-catchers or dishes for candy and trinkets.

I have a few pieces (the original amber without the stupid non stick kind) left. I use the small ones to heat things in the microwave. I've had no problem using glass cookware on the stove top but then I have always used Corningware and stove top compatible Pyrex all of my adult life. It doesn't require high heat since it holds the heat so well. I do rice in Corningware and I basically almost turn the heat near to off after it comes to a boil.

I had electric coil stoves in the past but not I have an open burner gas range. Still works fine. You just need to adjust the heat to the pan.

I find the post on the other linked thread odd since it was Corning that came out with the first glass cook-top to be used with their glass cookware. The two were meant to go together.

the one thing I have read many times about the smooth top stoves is beware of things that can get so hot it actually melts to the top which is one reason they warn against porcelain coated pots, so glass may have that same problem if it gets super heated.
I think the previous owners here must have darn near done that melting thing to mine because there is a ring around the largest burner that is etched into the glass top, no cleaner or any amount of scrubbing will remove it, it is literally now part of the stove top. Does not look very pretty but does not seem to bother the function.

I have had a set of the visions and rarely ever use them, I will on occasion use them in my microwave. Now the amber casserole with lid I do use often in the oven. They are definitely not a favorite of mine.
