quilted curtains? And jean rag suggestion.

I would like to make curtains for my sewing room. Do you think it would look ok to make a strip of pieced blocks along just the bottom of the curtain? Has anyone made quilted curtains before? Should there be batting in them or not? It would have to be backed so the seams don't show. Anyone have ideas for me out there?

I'm bogged down with cutting out denim squares right now. I need 150 of them! But I have to say this the best thing one can do it go to rummage sales and buy huge jeans. I got 30 squares out of 1 pair of pants!!!! All for 50 cents.

I thnk curtains with quilt blocks across the bottom would be so cute. Yes, I would line them, at least, where the quilt blocks are.

I went to a rummage sale and got 6 men's shirts for $2. I am collecting neutral colors to make a scrap quilt from quiltville called Smokey Mountain Stars. My hands won't handle denimn so have fun with your rag quilt.

When my grandchildren were younger I made curtains for the room we had for a play room. We moved and the children are older with no need for a playroom so I cut the curtains as they were too short for my sewing room and just made a valance from them. The curtain is just plain pocket rod and the bottom is a row of paper pieced blocks with initials of each child and a block for their birthday. They are 6" blocks set together with 2' strips. I put a backing but no batting just in the area behind the blocks. The purpose was to cover the seams. We all like them and the children like to pick out the blocks that are especially for them.

In my laundry room, I have just a valance on which I machine appliqued some random strip blocks and a piece of machine embroidery.

I think your idea sounds great.

Calliope - Thank you for your suggestion of dividing the quilt into more manageable sections, what a great idea! I'll be grateful to you when I'm working on this quilt :) Since your quilt is warm enough for an Ohio winter I feel comfortable going without anything in the center at all. Love the colors you chose the red flannel with the denim must look awesome! Thank you too for letting me know that you work with 1" seams. I've been wondering about this since some work with 1/2" seams. I bet it makes a prettier fray this way too so I'll definitely take your advice here. I'm not surprised at all that your grandson values his quilt for its beauty and because it was made by your loving hands. The color (and denim) you chose for the quilt definitely makes it more masculine. I believe men appreciate our quilts more than they lead us to believe :) My husband rolls his eyes and yawns (jokingly) hearing about my quilt projects. However, he could hold his own talking with a group of quilters about quilts because I tell him details anyway LOL! When I finish the first one I'm going to make a 2nd rag quilt (raffle quilt) that will benefit the Alzheimer's Association. I've made 2 raffle quilts for them in the past. The last one was a paper pieced queen size pineapple quilt. A rag quilt is more sensible since the pineapple quilt didn't raise the dollar amount it was worth. I'm in the market for a featherweight because my sewing machine bit the dust (it was way too expensive to repair.) So I've begun collecting denim in the mean time. It's been 1 1/2 years since I've worked on a quilt (that's when the machine broke.) Yes, I had withdrawal symptoms and am very eager to get back to my quilt projects. When I started out, I used to just start sewing quilt blocks, without knowing for sure how big the finished quilt would be. I tried to make the biggest possible quilt from whatever fabrics I had chosen for the project. A few years ago, someone I met suggested that I try some smaller projects for a while. Something I could complete relatively quickly. Less chance to become a UFO, I figure. My smallest quilt so far is a 7x12" crazy pieced "tiny table topper" and my biggest is 80x80". When giving a quilt as a gift, I usually make a 60x60" size. I have made place mats. I chose novelty fabrics that the recipients would really, really like, and that would go with the rest of the house. No way they could find those in a store! I also make "purse pals" for gifts: tissue holders, coin purses, zippered pouches. I have decided to make myself a set of 18x24" wall hangings. I will only need one hanger, since I will rotate them around the seasons. I need to make myself some table runners and table toppers, to protect the wood tables. I want to make more tote bags and purses. And quilted jackets. I only have one so far, and it used a raw edge technique. I want something more tailored.

I was hoping you'd respond, Vicky, because I knew you had recently made one. I like the idea of tacking it by machine, I didn't exactly wish to made a gazillion knots by hand on this one. I am using warm and natural quilt batting and was unsure how many knots I needed to make to keep the batting secure. I have knotted quilts before and chose the cotton knitting yarn, because the effects of the knots were part of that particular pattern, but I thought it would be very distracting on a crazy quilt. Do you think I could get away with using mother of pearl or other vintage buttons on the tacks in the very center of the block? Biwako, yes, I'll post a picture. I used a dark green cotton sash between each block and am really liking how it 'tamed' the craziness of each block down and definined it so that each block is framed like a picture. I put a piano key border around it because it ended up being just a little shy of length to fold over pillows without it. I had also wanted to try one of those borders, and now I have. LOL. This is why I keep encouraging the newer quilters to participate in the block lottos. Had I not made three to submit, I don't think I'd have ever known how much I liked this block, nor how quickly it makes a quilt. So far my participation in the block lottos has resulted in two quilts. The other one being in a Brasstown Star pattern.

No, not selling. Trying to get help with finding the right kind of sewing machine for the type of quilt shown in the pictures. Did you even read the feed msmeow? Thank you so much toolgranny! I did just that today! My machine guy has an industrial Pfaff for me to look at when I go by to look at the 530 record and the 730 record. I will also ask him the part of the question I posted about presser foot motion too. Somewhere I have heard the term "box motion". Not sure if that is an industrial feed dog motion or presser foot motion. I have learned so much about different machines since both of mine have pooped out on me!! I do see why so many people that enjoy sewing or do it for a living usually have a couple of machines to choose from! I really love the vintage machines, I have always found the new computerized models a bit confusing! I will say the capability of these machines to produce embroidery designs blows me away, just not sure I could program the machine to do so without an extended education corse! ;) Meeting to look at the machines on Monday. Will come back and post how that goes! Really excited! Miss sewing too, been 2 weeks now, beading is not as fulfilling for me!! Have a great rest of your weekend everyone! Super Bowl Suday tomorrow! Ditto, what the others said. It sounds like a very nice idea. I have simple squares set on point for valances in our kitchen, and I made them so that the unbleached muslin that is the main fabric provides a lining for the colored squares.

I'm planning on making PP apples curtains for my kitchen and I thought I would line them and maybe use some flannel for batting and then quilt--just valences--that's all I use in the kitchen. I have a plan in my head but must finish a wall hanging first--will let you know how it comes out. I think your idea sounds really cute.

Vicky I just finished a lap size demin raggedy quilt for my nephew.
CLIP AS YOU GO AND CLIP OUTSIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I waited and clipped mine (6 inch finished) at the end and it was hard on my hands.
My sewing room faces the West and has 2 large windows. In the summer it will be 5 degrees warmer than the rest of the house. Even in winter if it is sunny it is toasty.
I am making quilted curtains for the windows and I am using batting and backing to keep the blocks from fading so fast and for insulation.
