IPE decking arrived warped

I've just had a delivery from a UK company of air dried IPE 141mm x 90mm

Lengths of around 4.2meters & less

About 8 to 10 lengths are warped, is this normal with lengths this long?

I never purchased IPE before & wanted to check that this isn't normal before I ask the company to collect all the wood

Collect all the wood? Why? Are you going to scrap the entire project? The boards that are unusable should be swapped out for usable ones. If you don't know how to use bowed boards, I recommend hiring someone. As you are building the deck, the boards that can't be made straight get set aside and returned. If you wait too long before getting started, it's going to be hard to argue your case that the boards arrived crooked if you let them sit around the jobsite for half a season.

Start working right away. Do not sit on the wood. Install a couple of straight boards and then clamp one of the bent ones in place at one end and see if you can take the bow out with the tool you bought for that purpose (bow wrench). If the board straightens, screw it down and keep going. If it is beyond straightening, set it aside. Call the supplier back once you have all the rejects sorted and stacked, and your project is 90% complete. They will gladly oblige. If you call them up at this point complaining you are just going to irritate them...and make it more difficult on you.

Hidden fasteners are quite a bit more labor intensive. I don't know about 3x more, but there is a learning curve. I also personally think the end waxing is a waste of time and $. The boards will check if they want to. Plenty of boards from the lumberyard are already end-checked with the wax junk on there. When you cut a board that already has visible end checking, it is really likely to check where you make the new cut. It is a property of that particular board. I read somewhere on this forum that if the trees are harvested during a full moon phase, the wood is really prone to checking. Bottom line, if you can hand pick your Ipe, discard ones that already have visible end checking. Go ahead and use the wax on the ends if it makes you happy. It won't hurt anything as long as you don't get any on the finish surface of the wood. The wax repels other finises.

Thanks. Our contractor is a good guy and done great work for us in the past. I think he is just getting other advice, especially from his ipe distributor, and is worried about taking chances on quality. Most of the ipe distributors around Maryland are claiming we should only use 5/6 x 6, but you guys seem to have real experience with the wood. I guess the trick will be convincing our contractor that it is okay to use 1 x 6 and shipping it in isn't as risky in terms of quality as he thinks. Any thoughts on Massarandula? Thanks again.

Joe had a good idea, drive some tapered shims between the boards until they are close to the right place, screw the decking down. This might take several shims,everything is going to want to move as you drive them in,just go slow, watch how the movement goes. You could screw down the few deck boards that are holding to give you something to shim against. Has anyone mentioned its a bad idea to use the clips??? John

Just wanted to say thanks to George at www.eastteak.com for the help in placing my order. George offered ways to save me money and went through each area of my deck to ensure everything was right. I must have spoke with him 6-7 times so far and I am sure, a few more times will be needed. My 700sf of IPE decking and railing arrives tomorrow and I plan on having a nice long 4th of July weekend installing most of it. I am not looking forward to offloading 8000lbs of the lumber from the delivery truck but, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Hopefully I will be able to upload a few pics as things move along as well as some questions for you all. Also, wanted to thank everyone from the forum for all their posts over the last two years as I think I read about everyone of them regarding IPE and it should make my job a little easier. Wish me luck! I just picked up a few cases of beer to hold me over while working with a few friends. Hope it is enough.

Oh, I just realized the dimensions you're talking about. Good catch, John. After a few minutes of calculations I figured this guy has a bunch of bowed 4x6. What are you building? How out of straight are they? Can you find a standard tape measure to help communicate with us in inches/ feet? This wood has got to weigh a ton. I've never worked with anything over 4x4 in Ipe, and that's for railings that are made with 4' lengths. A bowed 4x4 12' long is not really a problem once cut down to 4'

Back in the day I asked and payed extra for the lumbie to select out decent 2x's for a patio project as the rafters were exposed. They delivered junk. Loaded it up in the truck, backed up to the entrance to the store, and dumped the load right there. Within a few hours, decent 2x's were delivered to the site! Good ol' bad days!

The lengths are 13.78 foot long
5.55 inches wide
0.75 inches height

How much will IPE bend without cracking?

OK so this is regular 1x6 decking. How are you getting along making it unbent already?

This is a normal deck job, I gather. How's the progress coming?
