My new Pin Cushion

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd share my latest little project - I bought some wool vests at a local thrift store - and felted them - to make smaller projects - perhaps some applique - but one of the jackets has this addorable embroidery on the back - so I cut it and backed it in a solid portion from the jacket - removed the button from the jacket and added 4 to the corners - added a gold cord with tassels - and now I can hang this one with a pin to use as I work - it was a fun little project...I was having a little crafty moment away from quilting....

Just thought I'd start it with you all! I think I'm really going to love working with felted wool..

I love working with feld wool as well, and I really like your idea of a hanging pincushion. Love this one.

I had considered planting pin oak for some much-needed shade, but I spoke with a family member about their pin oak, planted when I was a kid. He had to have it removed a few years ago. He got about 20 mostly trouble-free years out of it in zone 8. I enjoy reading Steve Nix's Forestry Blog at about.com, and here's what he has to say about Pin Oaks http://forestry.about.com/od/treeplanting/p/bad_pin.htm If I lived in zone 9 and had a more "coastal south" soil, I'd be rushing to plant a live oak, but that's just me. I recently went to New Orleans and so many of them were left standing after the storm, I was shocked. Also, as far as your temperature zone goes, Red Maple would probably do batter in zone 9 than Pin Oak, but do what you like. I hope it grows well. Not much can beat a good shade tree! Thelocactus Leucacanthus = pin cushion?

A little bit of fuzz at the areoles is normal. Hard to be positive without a picture but you're probably OK. "Pincushion cactus" is a common name, hence can be applied to all sorts of different cacti. I have never heard it applied to Thelocactus leucanthus. You can get a good confirmation of an ID by posting a photo, also if it flowers that will give you lots of clues.

This was really nothing planned except for the embroidered piece that I really saw as a pin cushion - and then after it was done and I had these button - I thought about the corners - and then I thought about tassels - but it was too much - but I found this cord with tassels and thought ok - I'll just go til I feel it's finished ..It's a simple piece but because I have all of these bolts of fabrics lined up on my work table I can pin it in quickly to a bolt and it's there..ready to use...so it is practical!

I love having a bit of "stash"..here's a couple of photos taken a couple of months ago showing my yardages in my sewing room - but there's lots more in shelves and drawers... I'l lhave to take some new photos because I have a lot more than this now...this is an older photo...

You're a lucky fellow. You're also a neat freak! Us girls seldom keep it so well organized - unless company is coming or we have to take pictures, that is.

Actually, it's more organize now than in the photos - I've gone though the room a couple of times since then..I try my best to keep it orgainzed so that it will always be ready for me so just hop in there and do something new....

Your pincushion is real neat but I must say that fabric is nothing to sneeze at! I just wonder how yuou keep from cutting it up. I agree your REAL organized. Congratualtions.

See what you did, we're green w/ envy & salivating over your highly organized neatness.

From that 1st pic, I thought it was a fabric store, all the bolts lined up in a row.

Nice pin cushion, but I'm w/ Toolgranny, I want the fabrics -- those concentric circles in batik remind me of one of my favorite fabrics of all time (was in indigo) & I used up every last scrap of it. You have ALLLLL those colors!

PS: Love the mallard!

Bill you are just too greedy and clever - the pin cushion is lovely - you could also make a bag similar,,,,,,,,,but please can i just have all (I mean all) of the fabrics.
Wish my workroom was so neat, there is fabric everywhere along with lots of other things which we have never unpacked since we moed 16 years ago!!!! Ann
