RE: composite deck / bleach mold cleaning recommendations

I'm Edie Kello, the product marketing manager for a composite decking manufacturer. To clean mold, products containing sodium percarbonate have proven successful at keeping mold at bay and are environmentally-friendly. Be sure to follow the manufacturerÂs instructions. Clearing leaves and other debris off your deck and cleaning your deck at least semi-annually help to remove dirt and organic matter that support mold growth.

Black spots that appear may be tannin stains and not mold. Tannins naturally occur in all wood species and sometimes migrate to the surface in composite decking where surface wood fibers are exposed to sun and water. Tannin stains resolve themselves over time. Depending on the season this can take several weeks to several months. Once tannin stains disappear after the weathering process is complete, they do not re-appear.
