Thinking about replacing press treated deck, need tips

Hello,

Live in northeast, USA. We have a 2 level deck, first level sits about 4 feet off the ground; 2 level, about 8 feet.

Joists (2x10), decking, stairs, railings etc, are all pressure treated and are starting show its age and is time to replace. The decking is all suported by 4X4 presurre treated piers on concrete forms. I am somewhat handy, and hemming hawing whether I can tackle this.

Idefinetly want to repalcing the decking, rails, and stairs.

IS IPE available for all of the above?

What size decking to you recommend?

How about deck spacing?

I want minimal maintenance, if we dont seal or coat, I gather it turns gray, correct?

Any downfalls to not sealing?

You recommend, #8x2.5 brown headcoat screws. So the process is to predrill, and then Fill nail hole? Please explain, especially since we wont be staining or sealing; how will this look appearance wise?

Being anal, even though probably not needed, I am going to "sister" the joists for added support, amy issues here?

All tips, comments, experiences and suggestions are greatly appreciated...

I started to research the site, but presenlt dont have much time to sort through everything.

Jim
