Thinking about tackling tile job - need your help!

Hi, I am a handyperson around the home but have never tried tiling. I have been reading up on it and just demoed the bathroom - took out sink, vanity, cabinets and toilet as well as the tile on the floor. The tile was attached to a 3/4" pressed wood underlayment. The underlayment is over a subfloor of planks of wood. Now to the questions...

Do I remove the pressed wood underlayment and put 1/2" wonderboard or durock in its place, or do I need to replace the pressed wood with 1/2" plywood and then do 1/4" cementboard over that?

Also, I read that I don't need to tape seams with wonderboard, is that really OK? I am thinking of using a mosaic honey onyx tile for the floor.

Thanks so much for any help you can give. I am on the fence about hiring this out, but may be able to do it if I feel confident enough.
