'The Wilds' safari type animal park in Ohio

Anyone been to this place? I had never heard of it till I read about it in a book by Jack Hanna that I just finished. Looks like something I would love to do.

don't know if it's anything like the place we visited in ca years ago, or more recently the bear encounter at mt rushmore...we were almost dissapointed the first few minutes, then we drove around the curve and here were hundred plus bears...it was really amazing! in fact, it was one of the highlights of the trip...that and running into hurd of bison at custer park...

you really have to be aware that the animals are completely wild and follow all the safety measures the park asks...

Yes! I've been to The Wilds! In fact I live about a half hour or so from it. It is fun & interesting. They have a bus that takes you on the tour, or for a bit more $ you can ride in the open air transport. It's 10,000 acres (iirc) of reclaimed strip mine land that the power company donated. The past season they added a "zip-line". They have "mid-size" carnivores along with other animals.... giraffes, zebras, rhinos, antelope-like, camels, etc. They all roam free in large fenced in areas that are similar to their natural habitat. I believe there are overnight "cabins" available. My grandchildren love it!

Hi folks... I had a blast today at the swap. It was great fun to see so many long time friends and make some new gardening friends too. We had over 100 people and over 2000 plants for sharing. Awesome! At our first swap in 2001 there were 28 people... it's was so fun to see some of those same people at the swap today. Thanks to everyone for coming with such a kind and sharing heart - that's what it is all about. Everyone seemed to go home with lots of new plants. :-) Murray and I came home with some tomatoes, sedums, lillies, coneflowers and many more. Thanks so much. Of course, thanks to folks for bringing a wonderful array of tastey potluck food! I say this every year... gardeners sure can cook and bake. Thanks to folks that donated door prizes. Carol, it was so nice to meet you and I am glad you enjoyed your first swap. We had about 50 people which is good for our first one. But next year we want to get more of the locals to come out and join us. We don't have plant swaps as a rule around here so it was something new, but everyone enjoyed it. We will advertise more next year. The food, there is no words to describe the food, I just took a spoon full of each thing so I got a taste of everything, and desserts, there was no way I could taste everything and I wanted too. Joyce is a doll and you would enjoy the Blue Bird. But if you go you MUST make sure that you go into the toy museum, you don't want to miss it. Of course you must stop at Betty Kaye Bakery. In the fall The Perennial Place has a big sale and it is only a little way out of town, he has nice plants. I was so tired from the night before, I dug until 9:30 as I wanted the plants to be fresh. I took 75 things, some were for my son, he was the one who gave the beautiful bud vases of the girls head and the flower dog. I wanted to have a good selection of plants so everyone got something they wanted. Next year you can always get on here and tell people what you are bringing and what you would like to have. Sometimes there is someone out there who has extra and they are willing to share them. (I wanted to make sure there were plenty of plants for people who wanted extra. In the fall (spring too) they have one in Columbus, it is fun to go there. I took some pictures but they were not very good, I will try to get them posted this week. I am leaving for 9 days in the Outer Banks on Saturday. I must get these plants and in the ground before then. Out mike wasn't working and we have a few things we may change next year but overall I thought it was great. One of the young girl was so happy, she is a new gardener and she said she had the best pile there. I told her everyone thought they had the best pile, each one was unique. One of the children was so excited, he got a yucca and he was so happy he had the biggest plant there. Every plant ended up gone, and everyone helped cleanup, it was such a good day. Mimi, Loved the pictures,Your very good at posting and taking pictures. Didn't know my hair was so grey till I saw my picture.I didn't even recognize me.LOL I will have to tame it down a bit. Mimi and Beverly you two took a great picture together.And Beverly you have such an Angelic face and the pictures taken of you captures that. I was wondering if anyone took me and Abbie Jan serious about posting our recipes?I think it would be great to share our recipes with each other. Is this an overnight at the park? I did an overnight "Roar and Snore" at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in 2006. It was so much fun! We were in a tent right at the edge of the savannah.

Beeohio, thank you for your response. Sounds like The Wilds is the place for me. My home decor is so into animals that friends and family refer to my house as "the zoo"

Glenda, an African Safari would be at the very top of my wish list.

Jodi, I did get to tour the San Diago Zoo in 1996, but not that part of it. Have hoped to get back there before I die to do a Roar and Snore. Maybe Ohio is close enough for me to experience a similar outing.

Susan, I have experienced the "herd of bison" at Custer Park. Beleive me, those suckers are BIG! When you are on a motorcycle and half dozen bison are walking on the road next to you, you mind your p's and q's!

I hope you enjoy it, Garzania! If you're taking a couple of days for a trip, you might also want to travel a couple of hours west to the Columbus Zoo. It's a great zoo. Jack Hanna was the Zoo director for many years & he did a wonderful job in developing it. If you have kids/grandkids coming along, they would probably also enjoy the water park next to the zoo also (altho' I personally haven't been to it).

garzania, we almost panic'ed! sil accidently dropped his water bottle and then being concerned was gonna open the slider on the van to try and get it! we were almost afraid they'd stampede!
