lady said dura loc makes marble unable to etch!!??

I am getting ready to purchase my counters, befor i order my cabs, because I want to get my white paint color correct.So I like others love the look of marble, but don't want it to etch, so ruled it out and have looked at both white macaubus quartzite and luce di luna quartzite.While I love them both, I am still drawn to the marble.I just spoke to someone from Atlas marble in Newark Nj and she said they use something called dura loc that makes the marble completely stain and etch resistant! i have NEVER heard this, and I have been researching the forum for almost 2 years before I get set to start my kitchen now.She said she will give me a sample to test with the product on it.She said they are the only ones that have this.Does this sound sketchy to you guys??? I guess I will go and test it, and get prices for both the quartzite and marble.So far the quartzites are VERY expensive, it was 48.00 a sq ft for material, then another 45.00 sq ft from another place to template.Does this sound right for the macabus and luce di luna?? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Michelle

I've never heard of the etchless marble, although one place told me about a newish sealer from DuPont that has a warranty, although I was wary. I'm going to use the White Macaubus. I found fantastic slabs in Marlborough New Jersey at PMI. They are expensive, but truly look like marble. Sadly you are in the right price range (Mine are even more because I need an extra slab!)

The price unfortunately sounds right. That's about what we paid. The "etchless" sounds uninformed. Etching is a chemical reaction and isn't prevented bysealing. A good sealant should prevent most staining.

karin_mt, you are awesome! I've been sifting through your threads for the past few days and can confidently say this is the most I've ever understood about science related topics... I did the testing you suggested (thank you!!) and here were my results: Our sample is a super white "quartzite"... We put red wine, ketch-up, red wine vinegar, lemon juice, and a slice of lemon on sealed material (although our sales person couldn't specify how recently it was sealed and I know, from your education, that this won't help with etching just staining). We left everything for about 5 minutes and wiped it off and saw very very very faint etching, you could only see it on one extreme angle from the lemon juice and red wine and really only on the white parts. We left everything overnight and there were no stains at all, just etching. The worst etching was from the actual slice of lemon and you could see a faint out line and the white area seemed whiter to me. We did the glass test and it easily scratched a glass bottle. Only thing left for me to try is heat... My questions are: 1. If this material is closer to marble than granite, why didn't the red wine or red wine vinegar stain? I've not considered marble at all because of the staining factor and was really sad to hear that this super white would be along the same lines. 2. Why does the white in the super white etch more than the gray? In fact, I could hardly tell with the gray that it was etched at all. 3. If a true quartzite will not etch, then this isn't a quartzite... BUT if it's not staining, then is it not a marble either? Thank you!

My granite is called Golden Oak. My kitchen is long since finished, but the best photos I have of my granite are from the "during" phase. Here is an after (though I don't think the outlets were set). There is a backsplash there, it is Corian routed to look like tile. It looks better in person, but photographs like unfinished drywall.

For those who asked, my granite was called "New Golden Beach". After choosing it I googled the name hoping to see images of it used on finished countertops. What I kept getting were pictures of "Golden Beach" which is far more golden and tan than mine. Mine's a cream base with taupe striations and flecks of black. It is much cooler in tone than Golden Beach which to me has a yellowy cast. When I went looking for granite at the huge stone yard outside of Boston that my KD recommended, I was surprised to find very few slabs in white & cream that had muted patterning. They told me that those like mine flew out the door as soon as they got them in. They said it was because most who wanted that look were going with marble or quartzite, of which they had plenty. They tried to persuade me to consider one of those but I said I didn't know anyone personally who'd had a great track record using it the way I knew it would be used in my kitchen. The rep said that was the reason the light granite stones were taken so quickly. Customers like me who wanted the light stone but felt more secure with granite chose them over marble and quartz/quartzite. I selected my stone 2 years ago. Since then I have seen a number of people here install quartzite and/or quartz countertops and give positive reviews about their performance with regard to being stain and heat resistant. I still think granite was the best look for me in this kitchen, and it sure has stood up to all manner of things like lemon juice, red wine, ketchup, blueberry jam, etc, that might have been bad news with other more porous stones and choices. That said, I think there's a lot to choose from other than granite & laminate.

When I got my marble, there was a product out there that claimed to prevent etching on honed, but not polished, marble. I chased it down and after a fair bit of pushing and prodding, got a sample tile treated with it. It did not penetrate the stone -- it sat on top and formed a plastic-feeling top on it. If I wanted laminate, why not start (and end) with Formica?

There might be some other products out now, but I wouldn't plan on using anything you haven't tested. I would be suspicious that (1) claims might be overstated and (2) they could only succeed by coating the stone. Also, that product had to be applied by a certified professional and redone by them as well. Not sold to consumers at all. Made me wonder what was in that stuff and whether I wanted it on my counters.

If you get marble, get marble and enjoy it for what it is. If you don't think you can do that, get something else.

I looked into duraloc when I was looking at marble and the fabricator showed me samples. It is NOT a regular sealer, it is a thick coating or film that sits on top of the marble. The coated samples I saw made the stone look fake, so I nixed it. I agree completely with laxcats. If you use a regular sealer, marble will not stain but you can't prevent etching, you just have to embrace it. My marble has etched but I don't regret getting it at all, it still looks beautiful.

That new Dupont/Daltile ProAdvanced product is only to prevent stains, for 15 years. The product is guaranteed and if the stain cannot be removed they will in fact replace the stone.

It does not prevent etching.

It is something that is professionally applied after installation, and then the homeowner goes on line to complete the registration. It is transferrable between homeowners, so if the house is sold 15 times in 15 years, it is still covered.

The trick is to find someone who does it. The place where my current counters are from does use it, but we are not using them for the new build. Where we are building no one uses it or has even heard of it. As usual, I'm butting in and I'm trying to get them trained, I've contacted Daltile and given them the name of my fabricator and asked that they call on him!!!

And PMI? I wish I could have just walked around that place and drooled yesterday. It really should be a TKO Day trip!

I am wondering what you ultimately did regarding the DuraLock? I am purchasing my marble from Atlas and they have strongly recommending the DuraLock. Not sure how to go---thanks so much for any feedback.
