getting rid of annoying animations

The thread on paying to post here had a couple comments on the adds and banners.

I am NOT proficient at working with computers, so if I can do this ANYONE can.

To get rid of those obnoxious animations (dancing geeks), do this:

Go to START, then SETTINGS, then INTERNET OPTIONS, then INTERNET PROPERTIES, then click on the "ADVANCED" tab, scroll down to "MULTIMEDIA", look for "PLAY ANIMATIONS IN WEBPAGE" and uncheck the box if it is checked.

This will take effect next time you log on to your computer.

Another tip to getting rid of lots of advertising, go to:

This website tells you how to seek and delete adservers that automatically ride along on pages you visit, delaying your downloads.

Try these tips and see if your pages aren't a lot cleaner and load faster.

If you have done it correctly you will begin to see this message on the cleaned up pages:

"Internet Explorer cannot display....etc." This means that advertising that was there is no longer able to load on your page.

I am not a computer geek so my knowledge on this subject is limited. I downloaded the free Yahoo Toolbar last year. It has a zapper on it that makes a noise when it blocks an ad - reminds me of a flyswatter killing flies. It does a good job. What is really annoying is the ads that cover up what you are reading. You have to sit there and let it go through its thing because there is no x box to kill it. I have found this mainly on newspaper sites. The Yahoo zapper doesn't kill those. I call them popovers! The forum is so slooooooooow to come up under iVillage. Also, it frequently 'forgets' me and I have to log in again. Sometimes I have to wade through all those things I never use like my page, my want list, etc. before I can get to the actual forum. I agree that Spike did a better job. Walter Moores

Get AdBlockPlus for Firefox at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865 and add this to the list of blocked hosts: http://gardenweb.us.intellitxt.com* They have a little photo tutorial for Windows on the bottom of the AdBlockPlus download page; interface is the same for Mac. (I'm on Mac, works great; I've never seen a popup here and am actually more annoyed trying to read posts with all the deliberate asterisks and misspellings in them ... ;-) )

They always hiss with a newcomer. They even hiss at each other when they are used to each other, but one departs for a short while for something like a vet visit, and come home with strange aromas. One tip I got after Bindi's extended stay at the vet a couple of weeks ago - I realize it is too late for you but maybe it will help others in the situation. The vet told us to put a dab of cologne or perfume on each animal's forehead. That way there is a scent - but it's the same as their own scent. Pretty tricky!!! It really helped us with our recent travails with Bindi and bringing her home to avoid Ethel's annoyed 'what is that strange smell' hissing. Incidentally, Ethel not only hissed when we first adopted Bindi but she hisses at us, after we visit the house of the lady we adopted her from (because she has foster kitties nearly all the time). Ethel can smell the other cats on us. However, she did get over it after a while. I just wish I learned the cologne trick sooner. (we used the cologne most associated with my hubby - his CK Obsession - because we knew both cats would treat it as a familiar scent).

I have used the waffle liner stuff, which I usually pick up at Big lots they have it in all colors, and also the sheets of foam board the real thin ones you can even get it at walmart in the crafts area. I need that drop stop so bad I have had that happen with my keys and like to never got them out of there. I was at Sears last weekend and in the tool dept they had a big display in the middle of the aisle of items that were really inexpensive and one of the items was an extend-able magnet, looked like a long pointer thing that pulls out and has a magnet on the tip. That thing definitely is in my tool box now and it was only a buck or so.

I agree that those ads can be annoying, but I don't ever see them. I have a good popup stopper (google toolbar) and do frequent spyware scans. If you have the Google Toolbar, make sure you have the popup blocker turned on.

I have so many pages that I do want to see animated - so I woudn't shut it off.....

I really wouldn't mind a few discrete ads - they have to make money somehow..but the moving ones are not acceptable.

its working for me here and at other sites...I have the blockers and *had* spy bot which I have removed....most of this crap that flashes and pops up is why the spy bot is needed.

glenda, do you have Vista. I do, and I'm having the same problem as you. There isn't a 'settings'.

My system is XPPRO with IE 7. I suspect the following directions will work for any XP system and with IE6 as well as IE7.

Open IE
Click on/open "Tools" at the top of the page/menu bar.
Click on "Internet Options" at the bottom of the menu.
Open "Advanced".
Scroll down to "Multimedia" and remove the check mark in the box in front of "Play animations in webpages."
Click on "Apply".

You must reboot your system for the change to become effective.

This will get you the desired results.

You're right.
You can access the INTERNET OPTIONS tab just as she said, right from THIS page by going up to where it says "Tools" and continuing on as instructed.

Well then there must be a different way to block the annoying animations that 'some' folks see. I don't see them so cannot relate to them and really am not sure what I have that is responsible for blocking them.

Can you see Felix pacing below? Do you have the annoying animations blocked?
Felix is pacing for me, but I never have/see any annoying animations.

For anyone annoyed by them I suggest the Computer Help Forum. I imagine it is more about blocking ads than what it blocking animations.
