How do you grow garlic?

A couple of weeks ago I bought a garlic bulb and while cuting a piece out I ended up cutting the entire top off. So I put the bulb of garlic in a plastic bag so the garlic wouldn't dry out. Well about a week ago I noticed that my garlic had sprouted in the bag. So for kicks I planted it. It's up about 3 inches high and I have no idea what I need to do know.

Any ideas?

Let it grow. It takes a full season to develop a 'bulb' like you see in the store. Sometimes you plant in the fall for next year. Don't check it again until Oct - Nov. What plant zone or state are you in?
I'm growing garlic in Ontario Canada.

I buy garlic in the store and take the cloves apart and plant them. Here in South Central Texas we plant it in the fall. It's one of our cool weather crops.

I always plant stuff after I harvest my garlic. There is plenty of time to plant cool season veggies for harvest in the fall. And I also rotate my garlic. All it takes is a little planning beforehand. Where I plant my cool season veggies in the spring, I plant garlic in the fall. Never planted them in a container. I would not expect them to be a good container plant. If you have access to a plot of ground, plant them in it not a container. FataMorgana

The last of three foot drifts and a two inch ice layer over my garlic bed melted just this past week. Things looked dire. However, after two or three days of sunshine and temps in the 50's, I saw two inch shoots popping through this morning. Finally got my March 1 application of Blood meal down. Don,t worry. Those roots keep developing under all that glacial mess above. A quick count shows about 90 per cent survival.

I store the entire harvest of garlic and onions from my backyard in the cool garage. I keep only a small amount in nice ceramic trays on the countertop near the main prep area in my kitchen. I dislike supermarket onions and garlic because they tend to start rotting or shriveling in storage. The onions I harvest never seem to rot and my garlic stores excellently for two years, at least. I don't grow potatoes, so I don't have a ton to store until the next harvest. The 10lbs bag I bring from the supermarket goes into a lower cabinet in the kitchen - I make sure to keep my potatoes in a dark place. No spoilage since I go through them quickly.

I plant the little seeds that grow up out of the plant when it goes to seed. I dig a little every August for my personal use. When the plant goes to seed, I let the little bulb on top fill out good, then I cut it off, so the energy can go into to bulb beneath the soil line. I save a few of these to replant.

I live in Nevada. Right now it's growing in a pot in my kitchen window. Do I just leave it here and plant it outside this fall?
I'm just not sure how well it will do in a pot all summer.

I grow it in the garden below my roses. The roses love it! It helps to keep away some nasty bugs that love roses and then in the fall I get a tasty treat!

I planted garlic a few times.I also buy the garlic to plant its been treated.I plant like another poster said you plant in fall then dig out following fall.Nothing like fresh baked garlic.mmmm
