Cost of deck/front porch

We are going to get a bid from our contractor for a porch/deck attached to the front of our house. Size will be roughly 6.5'x17' and it will be about 2' off grade with two 6' wide steps coming down off the front. A railing will wrap around the three sides and down the steps. Finally an attached pergola (only beam and rafters), roughly 9' by 4', will cover one corner of it.

How much should I expect to pay (ballpark) using either wood or synthetic decking in Southern California. I have absolutely no idea and will probably try to get a 2nd or 3rd quote for piece of mind. The major remodel is getting pricey already!

I have no idea what prices are like in California, but from my experience with contractors here in MD, costs vary from around $15-18/sq. ft. (not including pergolas and stairs)

Thanks Renee. It might not show up well in the photos, but the stonework around the porch has a lot of grey in it. And the door is a gray-toned blue. We also have a lot of rocks in the landscaping. So I guess I was wondering if I should play off those. I don't mind the brown, but just wondered if breaking it up would be better. I also questioned if a dark brown porch would be "too much" with the roof and the mulch.

Even with that grate, a lot of moist air is going to be dumped under the porch from the dryer vent. I wouldn’t worry about the bathroom vent, but the dryer is an issue. Could you reroute it outside to vent above the porch? I’m not sure how many bends you’re allowed. But having it dump out anywhere near your living area in general is not ideal. Who’d want to sit on the porch and have hot moist air blown at them?

Something open like this would offer a lighter feeling: Down the road, you could do a lot more with your landscaping : --Plan taller shrubs or interesting grasses up against new railings. Choose plantings that work with your light conditions. --Edge your lawn near the garage area. --Either top coat your cracked driveway or replace it with paving stones coordinated with your stone work for a patio effect.
