Speaking of island trends.. Ikea layout

Just when I thought I had it all figured out, the friendly folks at IkeaFans threw me a curveball. Here are the details of both layouts. Let me know which you would pick and why.

Peninsula- L shaped banquette off back allows for more seating so my glitzy sunroom/dining room would seldom get used. Less storage with this option. better flow?

Island- overhang on the back of island with stools or a bench tucked underneath. This would mean that when we start a family we would end up using the dining room more than the island seating. More storage, plus a pantry. And the fridge is easier to access.

I'd do the second one.
The reason? I think you will have more prep space (on the island), and you will keep people out of your kitchen this way (they will only go to the fridge/sink and not clear into your space/by the stove).

The peninsula design works, but I think you have the space for the island. In the peninsula, your prep space will only be between sink and stove. In island, you can use (and I probably would use) the entire island for prep space too.

Where is your MW in either?

Is it just a hiccup of the design program that your island doesn't show a seating overhang?

The island plan looks like it gives you the better work flow from fridge to sink to range. That said, it's pretty hard for me to fully assess either lay-out from a 3-D plan. Do you have an overhead view with dimensions?

How much aisle room do you have around the island? You'll want generous aisles between seating overhang and glass-fronted cabs so that it doesn't become a one-purpose aisle - either seating, walkway or cabinet access.

Great post.. Most of my peeves were already mentioned... I will add: Overuse of pocket doors - they can't use regular hardware so they are difficult to open and close Stacked stone used everywhere...inside and out - most of the time, it is manufactured, not real and it shows! Jack n Jill bathrooms - these just bother me especially if you have a boy and a girl....tough to decorate and "share" that space, especially with teenagers. Outdoor lighting around garages and front doors that is sooo small...off scale. Pam

I didn't realize this was an older thread until I was about 9/10 of the way through it. Re: older kitchens - our knotty pine cabinets, painted green (bottom) and white (peninsula upper) are original to the house, circa 1961 (they turned 50 this year :-) We wouldn't be considering a remodel if they weren't so rickety, i.e. wooden runners, many of which are broken and veer back and forth like they have a 2.0 blood alcohol content, split pantry doors held together with Gorilla glue, etc. I laughed out loud when the Home Depot kitchen designer said kitchens should be remodeled every 15 years (I guess that means our kitchen has three missed opportunities under its belt). We've taken a huge hit on this house - the first real estate mistake (?) I've ever made but I guess the mistake part won't be realized until we put it on the market at some point in the future. My husband's condo, purchased before we met, was a victim of the aerospace fallout back in the mid-nineties. So, given the economy, the real estate market and the worry about putting even more money into this house, we need to be as prudent as possible with this remodel, that is, if we even end up going through with it. Re: white kitchens - I didn't even know who CP was until I saw a blog mentioning his name about two weeks ago. I've been really out of decorating mode for several years now and have spent my internet time reading up on climate change, the shrinking heliosphere, etc. I'm trying to rearrange my thinking to be less-doom centered and more than that, trying to retrieve the creativity I seem to have lost these past eight years - worrying about things I have no control over. So, all that said - I'm really enjoying the forum and all the kitchens, people, advice, etc. The kitchen I fell in love with isn't a CP kitchen. It's a kitchen designed by an interior designer in Michigan and what I fell in love with was the backsplash (not subway tile but tumbled beach glass 3 or 4" squares with beach glass green accents). That backsplash has been the driving force behind my recent bout of kitchen obsessing - that and the green tea stains in our countertop grout. We've been on the 17 day diet (forever) and although I don't drink the requisite 3x a day tea, my husband does and the Costco brand leaves behind a puff of Matcha dust with each and every cup. Perhaps the cheapest remodeling avenue (for us) would be a green tea colored re-grout. Now there's a trend waiting to happen! Organic, colorful - and given the product origin, perhaps even radioactive. Re: expensive kitchens vs. not as expensive kitchens - I've been on both sides of the counter on that. I no longer work and have become far more prudent than I've ever been in my life. My husband has a ten-year plan on cars which took some real getting used to but now I'm more of a "ten-year plan" type person in general. One of my good friends in the Midwest can't believe we have an early eighties refrigerator but as I've told her numerous times: "I've changed" (her reply, via phone, "where is Lee and what have you done with her?" The tao of the ten-year plan has seeped into my consciousness and I actually felt sad to see the previous owner's mid-seventies Maytag go out the door when it finally stopped agitating ( *wipes away single tear* ) Blah blah blah aside, I love seeing what other people are doing (or not doing) with their houses and if we decide against remodeling I hope to continue to live vicariously through the GW remodels/new construction/holiday decorations, etc. The creativity found here has been truly stimulating and is far less scary than a shrinking heliosphere.

Here's my thoughts. I would use this one because it gives you the most aisle space. i would flip what I assume is a 42" fridge (hard to read the measurements) with the cabinet so the fridge is closer to the sink area. This also takes away the problem of the width of the aisle. Less walking around the island and it will still look fine to have cabinets on the left of the fridge. It acts as a landing zone for fridge stuff, etc. While 48" for stools to pull out behind at the island may not be ideal, it is certainly doable. I made the island smaller so you have 48" between the island and the cooktop. That is the one place I feel you really want the space wide enough because of the safety issue. I like that you have 44" between the sink and island, and even 42" is fine. I also moved your sink down so it's not centered over the window but closer to the cooktop while still having a window view. Again this was done only so you're closer to the fridge but the prep space may be more important.

A 20 to 30 year old kitchen probably has lots of areas of wear and appliances on their deathbed----original cabinets were falling apart when I bought the house in 1990 - and they were only 13 years old---I don't think anyone here would fault someone for changing out a 20 year old kitchen I agree, especially about appliances. And I think all these statements are true, but I've got to wonder why. I think it's become a cycle, I think it's planned, and I think that it is something that a lot of people buy into, and this cycle happens because it has to happen. Appliances don't last that long, and energy efficiency has gotten better. The reason that appliances are mostly available in standard sizes is because now it's expected that they will wear out faster than the kitchen does, and new ones will need to fit. But I am not sure why something like kitchen cabinets should fall apart in 13 years, I know they do in some cases, but why is that? I know in my current house the cabinets are about that old and to some extent they have been falling apart for several years, as are the appliances. And this kitchen was remodeled and the kitchen was virtually unused for several years. There was cardboard, styrofoam and plastic wrapped accessories in both the oven and the dishwasher and they were several years old when I bought the house. It still fell apart. Of course it is all really cheap and poorly done, too. (And I demolished a 2.5 year old bathroom that was put in to sell the house. It was falling apart too, but the point is that I talk about keeping things for decades and I tore out a two year old bathroom, one that is about 5 years old and the kitchen won't be ten before it goes. I'm guilty. But the replacements will be there when I die, if everything goes as planned). But I don't know why cabinetry of even medium quality should be falling apart at 20 years, unless it's engineered to do so, so people are forced to replace it. And now that people are putting in granite and man made quartz countertops, what's going to be the excuse for replacing that in 13-20 years? Granite sits outside for a hundred years and little happens to it. I think that the consumer has gotten used to the idea, and I know a number of people who only buy low-investment stuff, because strategically they already know they are going to get rid of it. I've seen people in this forum who are in the early stages of building this kitchen and they are already talking about what happens when they update it, remodel it or completely replace it next time. Heck I know people who buy new toaster ovens, microwaves and blenders and stuff when the one they have gets dirty.

I like the island one as well, I had a kitchen that looked like number one, and when we renovated with changed it to have the island (though we couldn't fit in island seating).

I wasn't sure at first, but I loved the island set up, and allowing people easy access to the fridge without getting into your main work zone is great!

could you do plan 1 but eliminate the peninsula,keep frig in upper right[next to window is too boxy/obstructive].The space looks wide-try aligning island left to right-how about a squarish island? It seems the floorspace is generous:get the maximum from your island.[What are the measurements?]

Could you attach the peninsula to the back wall (by the glass uppers) and leave the entrance into the kitchen...between the fridge and peninsula? Still easy access to the fridge, without getting into your main cooking space.

And, could that back wall be changed to standard base cabinets? You could have stools at the peninsula and that area would be a great prep/craft/baking area. That would make Plan 2 a better 'peninsula' plan, IMHO :)

Thank you all for the feedback. Lisa_a... Do you remember where this all started? With my 70's kitchen that I was planning on just doing a "face lift"?!

I don't think I can eliminate the peninsula in the first plan, that would totally nix my chance at creating an integrated eating space. As would making the island more square.

The dimensions are: back wall 161, left wall 147, right wall 250ish, front is open to family room, dining room is just beyond that in what used to be a 3 season sun room will now be almost all glass, temp controlled.

Because I'll have a dining room is it redundant to have an eat-in kitchen? I have a pretty small house, It's an 1950's ranch, about 1200 sqft.
I can also do the island with no seating and just use the dining room which is beyond the living room. I forgot to mention, In the island plan I have 43 inches between the sink and island. 45" between range and island, and 53" between hutch and island (not including overhang).
I could do a square-ish island if I eliminate the hutch.

I'd go with the first plan. I like the larger and continuous prep space on both sides of the sink. Without a sink on the island, it might make prep more difficult. Also, the frig seems to face the dining room in the 2nd plan; is that right? I think it would be a nicer view from the dining room to see the counter rather than the frig.

It isn't redundant to have eating space in the kitchen and dining room. Before our renovation, we had a tiny eat-in space in the kitchen. When our kids got bigger, they outgrew the small kitchen area and we had to eat meals in the dining room. Not convenient! When we added onto our kitchen, we made a larger eat-in space that not only accommodates family meals but also some company meals. If you can feed the kids at the countertop, you'll be able to continue to cook while feeding them. That works well for me.
