Comments (8)BasilB, a fast change in water temperature is always a bad thing for fish. Water from an underground source or a public water system can have a much different temperature compared to the water in a pond. My public water tends to be in the low 60's all year. That could represent a 30 degree difference in water temperature from a pond during winter. That said, the recent outdoor temperatures probably chilled the water very quickly for you and resulted in minimal temperature change to the pond. The stock tank heater I use has a thermostat that shuts the unit off once the water temperature is above freezing. I also have my heater connected to a remote power switch so I can shut it off from inside my house. I have a telescope fixed to the hole created by the bubbles and can toggle the heater depending on what I see. (LOL, what ever it takes to stay warm.) I'm currently enjoying double digit temperatures and the air pump is sufficient by itself, but I have a feeling I may need the stock tank heater again before spring....See MoreSwimming pool water
Comments (10)I emptied out the pool gradually on the front lawn with no ill effects to the grass. When water accumulates because of rain, the L.A. County (think this who it is) comes once a month and sprays the water to kill mosquito larvae. If you owe a house, they already take out a fee in your house taxes for the abatement program. He said the spray was safe (right). The original plan was to fill in the pool, but the agent said that permits are required and if you do it on your own w/o permits and get caught, it will cost lots of $ and a long time to fix. I also used mosquito dunks and mosquito fish in the pool, but mostly immediately empty it out after rain because I don't want them spraying anything. Good luck....See MoreWho's Swimming?
Comments (40)Thanks, it's good to be back! 80's, I'm jealous!! :-) I've been eyeing covers and solar panels, LOL! I'm ready to swim! I was bummed about the green banana trees because I really liked how they looked behind the waterfall. I'll probably replant them and then maybe wrap them in the winter this year and see how they do. I cut them off before winter as recommended (about 12" above the ground), but they just totally rotted during the winter. We had some very cold weather this winter including some long, hard freezes; so that may have been the problem. The red one made it through just fine though! The red one is not at all what I expected, it grows almost like a bush. I linked to a picture of it below (from last year). It doesn't grow a trunk like the green ones do, it's more like the leaves sprout up and out from the ground. I don't think they get much bigger than 8'. Ours got to about 6' last year. I chopped it off for the winter too, it started sprouting again in mid-March. Here is a link that might be useful:...See Morekinda bummin....water temp was 86°.....................
Comments (2)Yeah, we're in the same area and boat as Stonesmama. How depressing to watch the weather report and see nothing but triple digit highs across the board for 7 days, argh! I like to swim before noon on the weekends because the water is a crisp 85, just where I like it. By evening it's up to 92 which is too warm if the sun's out but feels pretty good after dark when the air temp starts dropping off....See Moretagprod
