Who's Swimming?

I spent Sunday gardening and jumped in the pool at the end of the day for the first time this year. I love that! No added heat, no screen, low 80s air temp - don't know pool temp...

Now I have to get this pool back in shape for swimming - the SWG makes me WAY too lazy during the winter.

Anyone else swimming?

Two weeks ago air temps were in the 80's for a sustained time, water temp got to around 70 and kids/neighbors were jumping in. Still too cold for me, but they enjoyed it. Cold front and rain (ya-HOO) last week, water temp down to 58 as of this morning, but temps rising again, daughter is actually changing into a swimsuit as I type, I'm going out to vacuum and clean up after the storms, she claims to want to swim, so we'll see.

We're in central Texas, I'm thinking in another few weeks the kids will be swimming consistently, adults probably not for a month or more.

Yes, you can get drop-in steps for a vinyl-liner pool. Lots of models from a variety of manufacturers. We got the steps initially for us---it's much easier to enter and exit the pool via steps, and the handrails give extra security. We've taught all of out dogs (as well as all of our friends' dogs) on how to use the steps. No biggie---you just need to train them to NOT flail wildly along the edge of the pool but go directly to the steps to exit. I find that tiny bits of salami work really well :o) I think the solid plastic steps are a better option that the floating ramps, since they work for pets (especially large dogs) as well as small children, the elderly, limited-mobility swimmers, and the rest of us. We take the steps out in the winter (we are in New England), and put on a very sturdy cover that connects to metal in-ground posts. I've stumbled onto this cover and got wet to the knees, but bounced right back up again. The dogs race back and forth across it throughout the off season (typically there will be a foot or less of water on top of the cover when they stand on it). Eventually it all freezes for the duration of the winter. We've replaced this style of cover twice in 22 years. It did not need to be replaced because of any wear caused by the dogs, rather the stitching eventually gives way probably due to the long-term effects of UV etc. Hope this helps.

Pool safety: The first thing you should do when you enter a pool area is locate the hook, and if there's no hook, the leaf skimmer. Unless you're certified in lifesaving and power swim regularly, one of the most dangerous things you can do is get in the water to help someone in distress. Use the hook to catch the swimmer under the arms or around the waist, or else get the swimmer to catch hold of the skimmer, and pull to the side of the pool. If there's no pole, throw a life ring, but if there's no rope have the swimmer hanging onto it before you get in the water, and pull the ring, not the swimmer, to the side. Any kind of floaty toy or noodle will work in a pinch, though something big like an inner tube or lounge float can be too hard for a panicked, stressed and tiring swimmer to hang onto, so if you can, choose a kickboard or beach ball instead, or even a throw pillow or small cushion off a chair. No matter what, remember you're much stronger on the ground, and in better position to call for help. I get the appeal of private beaches, but I wouldn't go into moving water deeper than just covering my feet without a lifeguard.

Don't be surprised if that crow continues to harass you from now on. I've seen documentaries where they have proven that not only can they recognize human faces that they feel are a threat or a menace, they can relay that information to the next generation of crows, you might be in for a lifetime of crow harassment! I know my dog once brought down a crow (how I'll never know) and I happened to be right there after she did it, she was getting ready to go in for the kill and I stopped her. The crow seemed injured and hopped away to the woods while I took the dog inside. I then went to see if the crow was still on the ground and happened to see that it had made it up into a lower branch of a pine tree. Later it was gone. But a long time after that whenever the crows were around they raised all kinds of hell at my dog. So I'm assuming that the crow told it's buddies about it.

I went in another pool today with a screen cage and solar heat - don't know that I could tell much difference in temp. between that and my open / no heat pool. Interesting. I wonder if the screen/solar cancel each other out?

Both pools are still too cold for me, I was just really hot when I jumped in - I'd rather have my pool temp quite warm!

Anyone else swimming?

Us! Gulf coast, central Florida. Screen, large trees and solar heating. Another couple of degrees will make it just right for me.

Outside temps in Southern Cal are in the high 70s. this week.

The kids jumped into the pool Sunday when the pool temp was 65!! They took the surfboard out there and practiced their stance.

I started up the solar yesterday morning and the pool temp is now 78. Another ten degree and I may join them.

Northern Cal is not the same.

We've had a few days of over 70 temps, but the start at 40's, so water is still cold.

Only that persistant duck gets in the pool. Depsite my pool toys all around and chasing him off.

spring break in Houston - water temp about 66 yesterday, prob a bit warmer today - I'll boost the heat for Friday/Sat - new pool this winter and we've only been in it once - although I heat the spa about once a week.

Well a cold front went through - back to mid-70s, BRRRR. So the pool is too cold again. (We're in central Florida (space coast), too, Sis3)

I did buy a new cartridge filter today to get ready for the season. They get a workout, but they're $80, and we have to replace it every year...I don't think this is the norm, though?

Sorry about the lingering duck, nutbunch. Was it you I suggested the alligator for? Didn't work, eh?

Sounds like everyone is gearing up for pool days - hooray.

Hey Last Mango,

He laughed at the alligator. He must be used to floating toys and knows they wont eat him. We're in a high residential area so no shooting him.

My options now as I see them are pool cover. My DH likes the idea of a clear acrylic one so when he flys over and dives in for a landing he'll be surprised.

Or the other option is trap him and release him far away at a nice lake with other ducks and hope he can't find his way back.

I prefer to get a dog, because I like dogs. But DH does not.

We are! Pool temp 85-85 with Pentair Mastertemp, air temp in the mid 70's to low 80's. Spring Break here, so great for the kids (and the parents). We have only had our pool since November, so really this is our first pool season. We swam New Year's day with the heater, but that's it.
We are hoping to get our outdoor fireplace built in the next week or so.

Nutbunch - maybe you could just BORROW a dog! I'd lend you mine, but I'm on the opposite coast. He goes berzerk if anyone or anything is in the pool - great alarm system - but irritating if you're peacefully floating on a raft.

Hi all!
It's slowly getting warmer here in CT but the sun is beating down on our enclosure soooo, inside the air has been 85-plus degrees!! The water is still chilly but we plan on taking the pool cover off tomorrow and scooping out the debris that went in before the enclosure went up. I'll stick a thermometer in the water then to see what it's up to and let you know. Have asked the PB to come out 3/31 to officially open us up!!! Can't wait!

I got in mine today, for the first time since October (I'm in Spring - just north of Houston), but not before heating it to 90 degrees.

Yeah, I'm a wimp. But since my pool is so small, it got to 90 in about three hours.

Then I made a batch of pina coladas, got on the float, had my dogs swimming all around me, and the sun went behind clouds, and stayed there for the rest of the day. I actually got cold and had to get out...lol.

We were able to pump off the cover and throw a thermometer in the deep end; enclosure air temp 85, pool water temp 48... a little TOO chilly still! It won't be long, though, before we're up and running!

We're in Louisville and we usually aim for Derby weekend to get the pool open. It will be too cold, but if it's a great day on that Saturday I'll crank up the heater.

We're not swimming... but spa'ing :)

Orlando, unscreened pool and the water temp is hitting about 72-74 degrees daily. Been putting the spa on low 90s using our heat pump. Very relaxing.

Northern TX/Southern OK area...Only the dogs are swimming! One dog pretty much "swam" all winter long! Pool temp is 68 degrees...no heater, no cover.

Just 10 more degrees and I'll consider putting my feet in. Even 84-86 degrees seems cool to me; guess I'm getting old (or maybe wise???!!).

Seems like the overnight temps need to stay above 50 or so on a consistent basis before we can generate some nice swimming temps.

Your dog is gorgeous! If I borrowed him, you'd not likely get him back! Love the french bulldogs!

I already enquired from my friends, except one friends dog is scared of his shadow. The other friends dog, turned out to be a chiuahua.

Maybe I'll post on Cl advertising that I'll watch your dog when you go on vacation! Can make some money and get rid of the duck. I love this idea!

It's supposed to get to the high 80s here this weekend - maybe the first "real" swimming of the year? I do like my water WARM, though.

rworthington - 58 and the kids are in? Yikes.

Nutbunch, good luck with your dog search! We do love our Frenchie, but he sure is crazy about the pool. I like your CL idea!

Its been a cold spring in NC, but come hell or cold water - I'm jumping in this Sunday (the next time the sun is scheduled to come out). I'm cheating, though ... I fired up the heat pump so it should be decently warm water.

Not yet here in coastal SC. Water temp is at 64 with a solar cover. Got down to about 48 at the lowest through the winter.

Yesterday it was 60 outside but 110 under our enclosure (whew!) and the water bumped up from 48 to 55 degrees! We open the pool this Tues; can't wait! We'll need to ventilate our heater before we can use it so hopefully the water will increase in temp just due to the air temp inside. Our gas man has yet to call us back to put in the heat shield... I'll keep you posted!

Well, it was cloudy and rainy on Sunday so the pool never warmed up. :-(

BUT, we had visiting dogs and the corgi, rat terrier and french bulldog were in and out of the pool all afternoon - racing around from shallow steps to deep steps. It was quite amazing to watch. (No possibility of ducks (or any other wildlife) here, Nutbunch!).

We have swimming as of Sunday April 19, 2009!!!

It was a record hot 92 degrees, although the pool was a chilly 67 degrees. Really regretting the not enough moola for solar heat thing. Ha.

Today is also supposed to be hotter 95 degrees. Then cool down later in the week.

However we all were pretty excited to swim for a bit in the brand new pool! The pebble sheen was really smooth on our feet!

I finally finished the plumbing on my solar system last week. (eight 4x12 Heliocol panels) I now have the pool up to 82 degrees. I've been swimming all weekend. Air temp is supposed to hit 97 tomorrow. Guess I'll have to finish installing more fog nozzles..........

Hey everyone! I haven't posted in quite a while, with the temp's warming up it's got me looking longingly at the pool again :-) Water temp is 66 (we're near Dallas). The kids have been in a few times in the last couple of weeks VERY briefly. I don't get in past the baja shelf when it's that cold though!

Pool made it through the winter uncovered just fine, the SWG sure makes maintenance a breeze. We add acid, clean the cleaner bag, pump screen and baskets about once a week and that's it.

All our landscaping survived OK with the exception of the two green banana trees which both died. The red banana tree made it OK.

Phx here. Started up the solar yesterday am. Pool temp 72. By 4pm 80. Today 84 at 4pm. Kids swam yesterday afternoon then put the solar cover on. Love the solar. Happy swim season everyone.

Hmmm I had a few more posts on this subject but they somehow disappeared... weird. Anyway, the kids were on school break all last week so we were able to spend a lot of time in the pool. The enclosure heats up very nicely in the sun which has helped the water temp to rise. We turned on the heater and opened the enclosure for ventillation at the beginning for last week to get us from the low 60's to the low 80's. We've been just using the solar cover at night to retain the heat. Weather predictions this weekend are promising upper 70's to low 80's so I suspect we'll be swimming under the open sky!! Hooray!

tres! I've missed your frequent upbeat posts! Glad to hear you and kids are making it in the water, even if for a short time - our climate is more similar to Houston than Dallas, so our kids have been swimming for several weeks now. Heat pump has been keeping the pool in the 80's - it would be in the 70's otherwise.

So what kind of winter did you have in Dallas? I imagine you get harder and more frequent freezes than I do in North Florida, and I'm interested in your red banana. I planted some birds of paradise, which survived our few nights into the upper teens this winter without having been covered, although with some damage. We kicked around bananas instead of birds, but my understanding was that birds were more cold tolerant. Did you identify the red banana in the photos you posted in your "pool life" thread? How big will they get?

Thanks, it's good to be back! 80's, I'm jealous!! :-) I've been eyeing covers and solar panels, LOL! I'm ready to swim!

I was bummed about the green banana trees because I really liked how they looked behind the waterfall. I'll probably replant them and then maybe wrap them in the winter this year and see how they do. I cut them off before winter as recommended (about 12" above the ground), but they just totally rotted during the winter. We had some very cold weather this winter including some long, hard freezes; so that may have been the problem. The red one made it through just fine though! The red one is not at all what I expected, it grows almost like a bush. I linked to a picture of it below (from last year). It doesn't grow a trunk like the green ones do, it's more like the leaves sprout up and out from the ground. I don't think they get much bigger than 8'. Ours got to about 6' last year. I chopped it off for the winter too, it started sprouting again in mid-March.

Thanks tres - I'll need to look into the red bananas - very tropical looking and would fit nicely into my landscape. Did you cut these down to 12" as you did to the green ones?

I posted in late March. Water was 72-76 back then.

We've been swimming since mid-April. Water temp is 86 degrees daily this past week in Orlando (air temp hitting 90+ degrees all week). No screen.

Our water just hit the low 80's the week before last.
My big kids, some of their friends, and I went in yesterday evening and stayed in late into the night bouncing back and forth from the tub to the pool. They've been swimming but it was my first time in for the season.
I should have been in practicing for the opening B-ball game. I was viciously humiliated.
This afternoon I'll have to see if my 14 yr old daughter can get a few of her friends over. Redemption is always sweet, even if it comes playing against 8th grade girls LMAO!!!

Went in (by myself) for the first time on May 2nd. My lovely bride and I enjoyed another 2 hours yesterday afternoon.

We're in El Dorado Hills, east of Sacramento, CA and went in today for the first time of the season. Air temp was 88 - water temp was 71. Cannon balls with the girls, and swimming with the dogs......priceless !!

Swam all weekend, and now I have swimmer's ear, argh! We bought a solar cover a couple of weeks ago and man does it help! The water is holding steady in the 82 range despite nighly lows in the 60's and daytime highs in the low 80's. Normally the water would be around 10 degrees cooler! The kids were in practically all day yesterday.

I did indeed, late in the fall the leaves all pretty much flopped to the ground so I cut it off about 12" up. Oh by the way, I went to buy new green banana trees and the nursery told me the old ones were probably still dormant. Sure enough, we've got some new sprouts coming out. The center part is dead on both of them, but the "bulb" is still kicking out shoots. The red one is sprouting in the middle though, it didn't rot in the middle like the green ones did.

I SALUTE YOU!!!

At that water temp only the dogs and kids would be swimming at my house, I'd be taking pic's from my new hi-res telephone camera, LOL!!!
