What to fill between pool/spa and pavers?

Hi all.

I had an inground pool installed last year and then had concrete pavers installed around the pool (cantilevered to the edge of the pool). The installer filled in all the joints with polymeric sand that hardened to prevent loose sand from getting into the pool.

However, the sand in the space between the pavers and the attached spa never hardened like it did around the rest of the pool. When it gets wet it comes out and eventually finds its way into the pool. I even cleaned out the old sand and tried to reapply new sand this spring but that didn't work either (the sand never hardened properly).

I figure the problem is either (1) the joint space between the pavers and the spa is wider (about an inch) than between the rest of the pavers themselves, or (2) because the sand is being installed between the pavers and the spa itself (instead of between two pavers) that it is causing the problem.

Is there something else I should be using to fill the space between the pavers and the spa? Maybe some sort of caulking instead?

Usually PBs install mastic in joints like that and then apply granules while it's still wet. The granules help it to blend into the decking color/ texture. I'm not sure if there is a max width for mastic, an inch is a pretty big joint!

Thanks. Is applying mastic a simple job? Is there a specific product you can recommend for a novice DIY'er?

The first row of pavers that go around the spa were glued/mortared to 3' wide poured concrete that goes around the entire pool, so stability of the paver isn't really the issue here. Just looking for something to fill the space.

With pavers, you get weeds. Comes with them. Best you can do is fight to a draw. Re-laying the pavers with a heavy layer of plastic between them and the sand reduces the amount of soil the weeds have access to. There's roundup. Takes 2 weeks to work, and for dandylions will take 2 or 3 doses. Road salt. May be hard on the stuff on either side. But it's cheap. Fertilizer -- straight cheap nitrogen. Mix up a strong solution -- as much as will disolve in hot water. In effect you are burning the plants. Apply lightly, just enough to soak the root. Excess will do the neighboring plants good as it runs off. Tiger torch. Lightly toast the leaves every 3 weeks. Key here is to barely wilt the weeds. They use all their efforts to fix the existing leaves instead of starting new ones. Tiger torch and propane tank at princess auto, peavey mart, some BBQ stores. Furnace oil. Gasoline. Environmentally unfriendly. Really hot water, or steam. Attacking weeds: A wire wheel on a disk grinder works well for cleaning cracks. An ice scraper or a shovel if there is more weed than paver showing.

Any rough surfaced material will encourage mold growth and be difficult to clean. Wood should be very smooth and well sealed. If humidity is very high you might consider cellular PVC (Azek, etc.) planks over a 6 mil polyethylene vapor retarder. Windows would help with light and ventilation and reduce the chance of mold growth.

Apparently in our area we only need the door alarms. The pb said they attach them with double stick tape so you can take them off if you want after your inspection. A bit surprising to hear that. They also require your yard gate to be self-closing and reversed so it opens outward instead of in. Thanks for your input on the sheer descents; and number of pool returns. I read somewhere on this forum that the returns also help to clean debris off of places the pool sweep doesn't go, like benches and baja shelf.

I think it wouldn't be a difficult DIY project. It's a self-leveling compound, so all you need to do is blow the old sand out of the joint, make sure the mating surfaces are good and clean, then pour in the mastic. Deck-O-Seal is one of the products I've seen for sale on various pool sites, manufacturer's link is below.

I contacted dealoseal directly and was told there are no distributers in my area (Toronto, Ontario). Any other products anyone can recommend to fill the space between my pavers and the hot tub/spa?
