Temporary covering for deck?

Hi! I have posted a couple of times before with no response..maybe third time lucky? :-)

I would like to get my deck stained before a party this weekend. However, we don't have 4 full days with no rain in this thunderstorm season for a full rain-dry-seal-dry cycle. Is there any way I can cover the exposed parts of the deck temporarily with plastic tarps so that it doesn't get wet? Or do you think the wood will sweat if covered for a few hrs?

Its not a good idea to cover your deck with plastic. Wait for good weather to put the finish on. J.

Thanks, John. That's what I suspected. Oh well, we will just have to party on a stripped to bare wood deck. Maybe if I keep my guests plied with food and drink they will not notice :-)
Any idea as to how long I can go between stripping and sealing? Its close to a month since we stripped with RAD. Though the deck is covered for the most part, the steps and railings are going through multiple wet and dry cycles each week. It can't be good for the wood, right?

My usual slow-to-warm-up self says that this is impractical for a pool of any significant size unless you have mucho $$ and an identified storage site, and that you have actually identified that the pool does not work well for your family's use of your property, but nontheless, it is reasonable to try to research the options. That may either get you to the product you desire or help you come up with a whole 'nother way to approach your living situation. There are some commercial products for this purpose advertised on the 'net. Dimensions are likely an issue--as in the above post, it would take different support structures and materials to span a large pool vs. something smaller. Also, have you focused on whether it is for repeated off-season uses, thereby requiring movability and "storage", or whether you wanted to keep your pool completely fallow for several consecutive years and then rev it up and dispose of the cover structure? That affects the design and $ issues. I say "storage" because one unique product I saw was a gazebo designed to slide over pool and then off to the side and be usable there. Whereas, if you have no other yard to speak of, then you have a different issue. There are also some previous GW threads on this issue.

My windows are 36" wide and too long for redishades to work well. I bought inexpensive, single-bed, flat sheets. For each window, I folded a sheet over at the top and used 3 thumbtacks along the fold to attach the sheet to the top side of the molding. The sheet hangs down to the floor. The thumbtacks are hidden by the fold, and the foldover makes a valance. I use a shoelace, which I attached to the side of the molding with another thumbtack, as a tieback during the day. At night I untie the shoelace, and we have privacy. The sheet is wider than my windows, and the extra material drapes (pun?) gracefully to the side. If I had had any idea that my temporary curtains would still be in use 11 months later, I would have done a neater job with the thumbtacks. Here is a link that might be useful:

pamghatten's suggestion will probably be the best you'll find. You could do several frames that connect together to make them easier to remove. I just extended the height on our second floor deck with 1x2's and black chicken wire. It doesn't affect our view at all.

No matter what pull up the carpet NOW That deck needs to be done peoperly with the waterproofing done on it not the ceiling below but for right now pull up the carpet scrub the deck with a bleach solution and either apint it or use the ceck tiles as mentioned above. next year when you are ready get this done the right way.

A month is a little long to wait after that two stage process but not to worry yet. What finish will you be using when the sun does come out? Anyway with twp there is no reason to wait 4 days.

If your using S American material no damage will happen it will just start to go silver, presure treated will just soak up water but with a day of sunlight it will be ready to go. J.

We are planning on using TWP516 based on ur recco on this board..made DH return ATO and shipped in TWP from GA! We have one third of the railings done before this rain-sun thing started over the last week..so far we are liking the color.
We have PT lumber most likely southern yellow pine.
So do you think 24hrs of sunlight is enough for it to recover? and how long would you wait after sealing with TWP516 to use the deck? Vinaya

516 takes longer to set up than 116,24 hr of say 80 degree weather would be fine far as puting the finish on but you will just have to wait to see how long it takes to set up.

The pt lumber will really soak up the finish after the rad when its dry to touch your done. J.

Hi! John, the weather gods were kind enough yest night..we took a stab at doing some more railings..it does really get soaked up..we will have to do it section by section as when time and weather permits.
