30' vent hood on top of 36' dcs or wolf rangetop (a disaster?!).
Comments (10)If that picture really reflects what you have, then I would be worried too. If the cabs on either side of your hood drop down close to the countertop, as the picture suggests, then you may have under 24'' of clearance from rangetop to bottom of cabinet. With a high output range that would seem to be an invitation to at least scorching of the cabinets, if not an all-out fire hazard. If you've searched for hood vent discussions on this forum you've seen that there is a strong disapproval for hoods that are equal in width to the cooktop, let alone narrower than the cooktop! Even with a high cfm hood (and 680 cfm does not qualify in my mind as high), you may pull some of the hot convection current away from your side cabs, but there is direct radiant heat energy that is not affected at all by airstream which will heat your cabinets. That's independent of the smoke/grease/odor issues that an inadequately sized hood would cause, that you say don't worry you. Why the compulsion to go with a 36'' range in a space designed for a 30''? You lose a couple burners of course but if that's what you have to work with that's a sensible option. Not to mention that a six burner Wolf would really require more than 680 cfm for decent ventilation. Or, can you pull down your two flanking cabinets and replace them with narrower cabs? Or even just delete them altogether and mount a freestanding hood there?...See More8 foot ceiling with 36 inch vs. 39 cabinets
Comments (9)I think you'll get opinions all over the place. It really depends on your kitchen-- the size, the layout, the style, the light. We have a quite small kitchen and did the 39" cabinets with minimal molding. Since space is at a premium for us, we needed to get every inch of storage possible, so 36" cabinets with extra crown molding would certainly not accomplish that. We have cherry cabinets and a dark floor. We absolutely do not find our 39" cabinets cave-like or too towering. If anything, the taller cabinets make the room look bigger, the ceiling higher, than our previous 30" cabinets. I am not clear if Stacieann63's not liking her cabinets would be any different with 36" cabinets and a bigger crown - her dislike could be more to do with the cherry color, or that she is comparing it to her previous 10' ceiling kitchen. For us, aesthetically, a thick built-up 6" crown would weigh everything down in our small kitchen, and also would not go with our simple Shaker cabinet style and mid-century clean-lined home. We did choose Alaska White granite countertops which are quite light to balance the dark cherry. Regarding the comment about the space between the counter and the upper cabinets - the standard distance is 18"; undercabinet lighting typically takes up 2" of that 18". Though the newer LED strips are so small that the 2" allowance for lighting should probably be more like 1" for LED light strips (if you are thinking about undercabinet lighting at this point!). You could also have some of the cabinets with glass fronts if you are worried about taller cabinets looking heavy. A friend of mine did that with just three cabinets in her cherry kitchen, and it really makes everything look lighter. We considered doing that too, but DH didn't want that, and ours still looks great with all cherry doors. I would never choose shorter cabinets with bigger crown molding, but that's my taste, our home's storage needs, and our home's decor. Your decision should be based on those factors too....See MoreAnyone with a 36 inch wide double cabinet with 8' ceilings?
Comments (12)I'll take a better picture of this for you today, but this is a 36 wide x I think 43" hanging all by itself. When unified by the backsplash etc., they look great. To the left of this will be a 19" floor cabinet made into bay window seating, so it really will sit just kind of by itself. In your drawing, I'm a bit thrown by the one on the left...it's hanging over nothing on the far side...what gives there???? I think mine works well because its over a 36" base......See More30" or 36" refrigerator for L-shape 13' by 8'?
Comments (14)It looks like you have a 6" pullout b/w the 36" refrigerator and the wall. I'm not sure that's enough - but it's better than nothing. Regarding 30" vs 36"...in addition to the comments above, consider that refrigerators seem to be standardizing on 36" in width. So, if you need a new one later, you don't want to be limited to whatever you can find to fit the space. Plan a refrigerator alcove for a 36"Wx72"H refrigerator. The refrigerator appears to be a counter-depth - is that correct? Counter-depth refrigerators do not hold as much as standard-depth refrigerators, so I think you will be better off with a 36"...See Morepalimpsest
