Finding a Civil War gravesite

Alisande? You come to mind on this subject, hope you don't mind me calling you out. I have an ancestor who was killed during the Civil War in the battle of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana on April 9th., 1864. He had moved from either Ohio or Pennsylvania to Iowa and enlisted there. I have some of his records from "Soldier Search" thanks to an uncle who has since passed, but his burial site is a mystery. I have his regiment info and copies of his company muster rolls, so have already researched his regiment and also the Pleasant Hill battle in La. He was not married. The Iowa census of 1860 places him in Iowa at that time.

I've looked at "Find a Grave", national cemetery records (when available for free), and census records, but most other sites require a fee - like Ancestor.com. Anyway, any helpful suggestions on how I would begin searching? Should I try the free trial some sites offer?
