Civil War novel--with roses
Comments (4)I found this book at my local library. At the moment I'm about two/thirds of the way through it and it wonderfully written. I'm enjoying it. Good job! Carole...See MoreCivil Was Quilts, anyone?
Comments (20)Thanks for all the comments! Donna, TFS all the links! And, yes, the colors may not appeal to everyone...thank goodness we have lots of color choices. lol Kate, you are the designer if you choose to make it creative, I know it will be your own beautiful design. Karlene, maybe tea dying muslin would help tone down the fabric that will fit in better?...just an idea! For now, it will have to wait a bit because I am finishing up 3 scrap quilts: binding one, layering another and making a back for the third out of wayward blocks that have been cluttering up the sewing room...I'm so dedicated to using up the scraps. AND, in the process made 28 more crumb blocks. I can hear Sharon now! LOL Gwen...See MoreCivil War Markers
Comments (8)toxcrusadr - I am a big advocate of going "paperless". Everything I have found has been saved on Dropbox, so if my computer crashes, it will still be there. I am really paranoid about that so I also have a Carbonite Subscription. And yes, I plan to leave any info I find. bulldinkie - Good idea about checking with the courthouse. The house is in Maryland, not far from Antietam. There is a large boulder in the basement (I guess they got tired of breaking up rocks as then dug). And I mean large.. like a VW Bug. I try to imagine what it must have been like for that family living there during the battle. It must have been very loud. If they didn't flee, I would be she was huddling down there by the boulder with the kids. I have traced the deed back as far as I could. Maryland has access online, but those don't have actual signatures on them. But the clerk of the court had beautiful (but hard to read) handwriting. I did find this 1853 newspaper ad that I am 99% sure this was for the house. The person who ran the ad owned all four houses on that side of the street. And the original section (log) of our house is about that size. In 1860 the a family was living in the house but did not own it. They bought it in 1865. Not sure what an "ordinary" size family is back then, but in 1860 they had 6 kids ranging from Age 15 to a 1 year old. Yikes in that tiny house with no bathroom, and no kitchen....See MorePre-Civil War House for Sale.
Comments (15)That staircase! And the overmantel (if it were painted white)! It's a gem. I've always wanted to do a house like this, but never could afford to do so, plus in my town, old houses are in slightly marginal areas that still have very high crime. At my age it's never going to happen, but a girl can dream. I agree that it's a generational thing. I adore looking and dreaming over UK real estate, and I could cry when I see the very soul ripped out of 200+ yr old houses, some even Stately Homes. The big ones apparently are bought by footballers and US hedge fund managers, and they think they're very au courant when they rip out all the fabulous molding and decorate it in something super modern and utterly garish. So long as it's not a Listed house, they can do this. It's just criminal and sinful to destroy so much beauty and wonderful workmanship....See Morestacey_mb
