Another Scam?

I have seen just about every scam that anyone can make up but have never received one like this.Has anyone else?

Dear Sir/Madam,

My Name is Mr Steve Smith, a UK citizen aged 58 and a retired hospital porter married to my wife Mrs. Ida Smith with no kids. If you are conversant with the world news, I am currently the winner of the Britains National Lottery worth 19million pounds (38Million Dollars) held last month, January 2008. It was by an extra stroke of luck that my wifeand I stopped off on the way home from a family visit to buy some lucky dip tickets and it was one of those which hit the jackpot.

Right now I am suffering from a Potentially Fatal Heart Defect which means that I have few days left to live on this Earth as my team of doctors has pronounced.

This very well could be legit. I looked and February 1st of this year was on a Friday.

The story of Steve Smith is true (see link), but I don't see why they would be contacting you as they have 4 children from previous marriages who could fulfill their wishes.

Somebody has used parts of a true story to scam others.
Ignore it.

I happened to be trolling the dollar store today, and I found this on the shelve, 2$ for 5L worth. I grabbed one just to test & see, but I wonder for others who may be familiar with this, if it seems to be another scam? It appears to be more for in-door plants.

This thread has certainly showed those who have the inflated opinions of themselves, elitist and the like. Don't hurt yourselves when you fall from your high horses. Not unlike grouchy when she put words and allegations into my mouth over her favorite (or was it her family's?) store and making claims about working conditions (that of course was never said, implied or alluded to), here too shows the number who live each day to find a problem with one word. A few letters of the alphabet. The root cause of political correctness, perhaps? Not unlike the hullabaloo trying to ban Huckleberry Finn. Bookburners of the world are uniting on that one it seems. It's silliness. And yes, stupid. When will people learn that some letters put together are not (or at least should not be) offensive to reasonably rational people. The "n" word is offensive if a non-black says it but it's not when a black says it. So guess words and letters aren't the cause of it are they? I could go on, but it'll only give the elitists more fodder to find a word or a few letters they don't like and get their feathers ruffled. And that might be stupid, wouldn't it? Like the song says, it's only words. Many of these comments were about as ridiculous as the hoopla over the word "garbage" not long ago. Obviously certain people get hysterical over certain words. There are certain words and phrases that I don't like but I usually try to not become a nutcase over it when someone says it! I'm not surprised that the "feelgooders" took offense to a simple comment. To them, we should only feel sorry for people who repeatedly bypass red flags. We have to feel sorry for the people who move road blockades and drive into flooded roads. We have to feel sorry for people who won't learn when they get scammed over and over again. Now you will see this twisted again into comments about the demented, the elderly and otherwise.

Occasionally you might receive a letter which is legitimate as far as locating abandoned assets or the like. However the tipoff here is that it says you can use it for bills, travel or whatever. The government would never make that statement. Years back a friend found my brother's and my names on an abandoned property website. My brother had put me on his safe deposit box and he let forgot about it. I got the forms to claim it and he had to fill them out but he didn't think he had anything of value so he refused to bother with it. No big deal to me. It would be his loss. You have to use common sense when dealing with these things. One scam that hasn't been used for a long time is the offshore phone number charges. But I suppose it won't be long before it comes back.

You seriously didn't get that it was a scam right from the first line out of his mouth? Stores automatically entering you in a multi-million dollar sweepstakes with a bonus car on top of it and they don't even advertise it? Wow. Although I would not have answered the phone most likely, and I'd have been falling down laughing when he told me something like that. And I'd be choosing a mauve/eggplant plaid convertible. See what he said. Actually, what most people don't realize is that in a situation like they they did give the caller at least several pieces of personal information all of which are highly prized by scammers. First a confirmation that the phone number was active. That just raised the value of the number when it's sold to other scammers. Secondly, that they phone is answered by a person. Third that the names associated to the number are accurate. Beyond that I'm not sure what was given whether willingly or inadvertently but rest assured this number will get called again and the information sold over and over again. If I get a call from an unknown number, well first I seldom would answer it unless I was expecting something and it was an area code I recognized, but had I answered and they ask the name I never give it without knowing who is calling. Never confirm your identity without knowing who's calling. There's a lot of ways to get your info but confirming it is their first objective.

I get these all the time at our business general email account... My IT guy is just appalled at the number of these that come in - and that people still fall for them...

Sure, there's a Steve Smith, but when you send an email to that email addy, you're scammed.

That's the ones that either get ignored ...

I've had several such.

Several telling me that I've won a huge amount in a lottery (usually in the U.K.).

Plus well over 100 (at the email address with which I connect to Gardenweb) from "bankers" or other "financial" people wanting help to move multiplied millions from some location (often somewhere in Africa, originally Nigeria) to my bank account ... and usually they offer me 30% or so, plus another 10% allocated for expenses.

If I'd accepted each, probably I'd be at least almost a bilionaire, by now! How would I ever manage to know how to manage such an amount of money?

Plus - I've had a number asking that I be their company's rep here, to collect money from their customers for them and forward it ... less my 10%.

I haven't decided what they're up to ... maybe have people send phony money transfers, and then after I've sent money, finding that the original paper was scrap. Or maybe into laundering money.

As joyfulguy said, that is a refined version of the "Nigerian scam" letter.

They say they want to give you money, but before they do (or before their fake check can be deposited in your bank) they will want you to wire them some of your own money for processing, taxes or something.

They get your money but you never get theirs.

The link looks true but I think it takes you to a bogus Reuters page that they made. If you go straight to Reuters, not using their link, there is no such story.

Gee...I must not sound trustworthy...LOL..I never get any of those....at least I don't think so....I NEVER open any mail that has come to my computer from someone I don't know .

I know it is bogus and I would never fall for something like that.I have just never gotten one like that with the attachment to a real news story before and wondered if anyone else has.

We get these letters in our Email all the time at the law office. Plus we get letters from prisoners who want to share the money as they are going to the chair soon and have buried money. You really don't even want to respond because one of the reasons these go out is to establish whether its a good Email address.
