Question for book readers

Odd as it sounds, I write for a living but don't read books. I do edit manuscripts, though, and I keep finding something that troubles me. Before I comment too harshly to the writer, I need to find out if what I see is a growing trend in books or whether I have a valid point.

This author uses (what I consider to be) too many italics. Sure, they help the reader easily know which words need emphasis. But I think they become ineffective after awhile - and sometimes cumbersome.

So for those of you who do a lot of reading, is the repetitive use of italics a new trend in print publications?

Thanks for your input!
