Update on Granlan's surgery

Hi all!

I wanted to let you know that Granlan had her hip replacement surgery early this morning and is doing really well. The surgery lasted right about an hour. Which in itself is totally amazing to me. They've got her resting comfortably in her room and won't be getting her up on her feet until tomorrow. The doctor said he felt all of her troubles were caused by arthritis. I think she's going to have a fairly smooth recovery if today is any indication. They seem to be keeping her pain under control and I know that's a lot of why she's handling everything so good thus far. Hope they continue to keep her as pain free as possible.

Hhireno--thanks for asking about DH. Almost seems like a lifetime ago that he had his surgery. So much has happened since March 5. DH is doing very well. He was discharged on March 11 and came home. I had taken so much time off from work during the previous two weeks that I ended up going into work the next day, leaving him home with our dog. Those first three days were extremely difficult not being home with him. I'm sorry I had to make that choice, but we made it through without any issues. When he was discharged they had him on an antibiotic for an infection at an IV site. Not a pretty sight. They only prescribed 5 days worth and it was not any better so I brought him to our local ER where they prescribed meds for another 5 days at twice the dosage. That did the trick. A week after being home he sneezed without his pillow and pulled a muscle in his chest, which caused him more pain than his chest incision. Thank goodness it was on his right side because he would have thought it was his heart giving him the pain. Only now that pain has finally gone away. We were scheduled to see the surgeon last Tuesday, however, received a call the previous day rescheduling to this Tuesday. Unfortunately I have a huge conference I'm running on Wednesday so cannot go with him. My DB has offered to drive him down, which I'm thankful for. Otherwise, he would have taken the bus, since he's not allowed to drive yet. Hopefully the surgeon will give him the green light on Tuesday and our lives will start getting back to something close to normal. We are scheduled to close on our current house and our new build home on May 15. Packing hasn't begun, but I've given myself until this Thursday and will start in earnest then. The past 3+ months have gone by so quickly. I can't believe we are leaving our home of the past 20 years and on to a new adventure. Just holding my breath that we make it to the other side.

LOL Moonie! I had to read your post a second time to catch your mistake. Sjerin-The stents are permanent.We don't know when he will be going home.They moved him to a private room today and will start PT tomorrow.DDIL told them we weren't bringing him home this time until he was able to walk around and do things for himself! That was what started all this in the first place.He was suppose to be getting up and walking several times a day but was staying in bed or sitting in his recliner all the time.I think he has learned his lesson.I think he realizes how close he came to being dead.If he hadn't had that filter he would be dead! As for me and DH,we are about ready to disappear for a while! Two babies in the "terrible two's" stage on top of everything else is about to get the best of us old people!LOL Hopefully everything will smooth out in a few weeks though and things will get back to normal,whatever that is! I'm seriously contemplating a few days of daycare for the two little monsters so I can get some rest.LOL Not really.They are actually pretty good most of the time but they do have their moments and can be a handful.We will make it though!

I haven't had misdiagnoses but I have had different paths to a solution-- and different prognoses. I understand some of it because no two conditions are the same and vision is a fairly complex function. Are you having vision issues also? I guess regardless of the issue, finding the right dr is key. My first dr said there was nothing to be done-- this is when the symptoms were just developing and perhaps could have been addressed more completely. I am so kicking myself for just accepting his word. I lost two years of critical time. I am normally a strong person-- unwilling to accept that there's nothing to be done.. but I can look back now and say that I accepted it because I was soooo bummed.. and also very ashamed and embarrassed by my issues. Also, I was seeing one of the most highly regarded ophthalmologists in the area-- and I am sure he IS good for a lot of eye issues. Just not mine. I am now seeing a dr at Wills Eye Hospital 2 hr away. If you think you aren't getting good care-- keep seeking the care you deserve! And yes, thanks-- today is good. I am working 3 hr today.. we'll see how that goes!

Sherry, I jjust saw this post……I am asuming you had back surgery? Fusion? I understand completely as I have been through 3 spinal fusions myself, 2 lower back 15 years apart and one in the neck as well. Did doctors harvest your hip bone or was a cadaver bone used? My worst pain was where they harvested the hip bone, but I remember hating wearing that back brace everywhere for 3 months! And yes, rehabbing is very difficult. You are in my thoughts. debra

Thanks so much for the good wishes and prayers folks. I'll be sure to save this post for her when she gets home. She'll really appreciate it I know. She's still doing great. I just can't believe she's had a major surgery today. I can assure you I never felt that good after any of my surgeries even with the good pain drugs they provide. She will either go to rehab after Wednesday or have home health care come to her house. Guess the doctor will make that decision. Again thanks so much.

Glad the surgery was smooth. The recovery should be smooth too. I hope we were able to calm her fears and encourage her.

I was fine at home with some devices from our Senior Center's lending closet and DH helping me. A visiting nurse came to regulate blood thinner meds and a PT came to help with rehab exercises. I was out shopping for groceries with DH a week after one of my hips was done. I hope she can stay home. (Certainly less chance of infections.)

What's the story on her other hip?

Praying for a speedy recovery. My mother had the same problem with her knee, and it was just bone-on-bone by the time she had her replacement done.
