I have a deck with a patio underneath it. There is a roof between the deck and the patio so the patio is relatively dry. What I would really like to do is plant a vine next to each of the corner post and have it grow and attach to the joist under the deck to form a living roof. Preferably it would be evergreen, but not a requirement. Of course since it is under the deck it would need to thrive in full shade. Does any vine like this exist? Thanks, B2

Also it doesn't matter if code now requires decking as all that matter is what was required of code when it was built/installed so checking with your building inspector's office wouldn't do you much good. I disagree. The building inspector's office can tell the OP if roof sheathing was or was not required when the house was constructed. Some jurisdictions do require it with all roofs. The OP is in a hurricane area. Things tend to stricter there. It is possible, although unlikely, that the house may be required to brought up to current code (if it doesn't meet it now) upon transfer of title -- emphasize unlikely. The building inspector is there and should be on top of this stuff. Why discourage the OP from contacting him?

The plumbing vents probably don't have boots on them, and the wall to roof flashing probably isn't done yet, either. Many of the trims and flashings are done in a certain order, so if the lower roof isn't done yet, it isn't flashed yet. The final wall flashing goes over the lower roofing metal. Likewise, the ridge isn't weatherproof until the ridge cap is on, although usually they cover it in underlayment, then remove the underlayment from the inside once the ridge is in place if it is a vent-type ridge. It's really too early to tell if they've done something wrong.

John, I'm limited on height for a few reasons - the ledgers are already up (deck is in a corner of the house), I've got windows underneath the deck and a doorway above, and if the joists (and beam) get too low the patio underneath will be unusable. I definitely see your point about things being too wet under the decking, but it seems like you would have the same issue with a torchdown roof - with the draped troughs I would think water would more easily be shed since it would flow to the middle of the trough and then drain out (water is less spread out than with a planar slope underneath). I've seen deckman22 suggest using sheet metal under the deck as a roof, but after searching the archives haven't been able to find his full explanation of how to do so. I've also considered using corrugated plastic under the joists screwed to a series of crosswise, graduated-in-size stringers. That way there would be air movement all the way around the joists. I apologize for beating a dead horse, it's just that I hadn't seen anyone post about the draped-type underdeck roofing before.
