Shenandoah/Timberlake/American Woodmark- Do you like them?

For those of you who have Shenandoah/Timberlake/American Woodmark cabinets... How do you all like them? I am close to visiting a cabinet dealer and am leaning towards this brand. I'd like to know how well they hold up, is the finish is good, are the drawers sturdy, how long after you placed your order did you receive them? I lurk here often but do not see alot of people with this brand of cabinetry. If anyone out there has these cabinets, I'd sure love hearing from you. Thanks!

We have American Woodmark from HD. We like them alot and get plenty of compliments. We bought the drawers with the soft close feature and installed our own soft close blumotion on the doors since this was not an option when we bought our cabs in 2006 (but installed last year). I would highly recommend the soft close to help with the slamming issue which will provide longevity too. It's my favorite thing in my new kitchen.

The finish is nice, and so far, the cabinets are holding up very well, though it's only been a year. We have the maple with moca glaze and they didn't overdo the glaze which is nice. Because it's just DH and I, we didn't need to spend mega $$ for top of the line cabs, nor would we. We did have a few doors that weren't to my liking, but all I did was call the store and informed them which ones needed replacing, and they were shipped and received within 7-10 days. No biggy.

I don't remember how long the cabinet order took to come in but from order to delivered it wasn't long at all...just a few weeks, 4-6 at the most.

I'd buy them again.

We also have American Woodmark from HD. They have held up beautifully and with 3 kids under 6 years of age i would say they can pass on durability. We have had them for 4 years now and the finish is GREAT, no chipping, denting, etc. We have hickory, which may account for the durability, in a spice finish and LOVE the color. As debi 2006 mentioned they soft close or blumotion wasn't available at that time either. We had a strict budget and as Debi 2006, weren't willing to break the bank when it came to cabs, which were $6,000.

Well you are asking the right person this question! I had ordered KraftMAid for my kitchen and was completely pleased with them. No problems at all! So when I was re-doing my bathroom I immediately thougtht Kraftmaid. Trouble was Kraftmaid would not allow me to have my doors beadboard and my drawers on the vanity in another front. They said had to be all the same front on my 5 foot vanity. So the only company that would do this mix/match was American Woodmark. Now to be totally fair, I do attribute a lot of the problems I had with my vanity initially to Home Depot rep - and in the end HD did make it right, HOWEVER the vanity came and the top was so weak, it had to be reinforced before my new countertop could go on. Alright not too bad, few bucks for maple wood to reinforce. Wrong doors were sent, well alright, no problem just resend the right doors. Ok right doors come with no drill holes in them yet the drawers have already been install thus requiring a PERFECT LINE up of the drawer fronts. Unit in my opinion is not worth what they ask. Eventhough they were a little pricier than Kraftmaid, I guess I assumed the quality would be better. I did in the end get a 200 refund from Home Depot for all the fiascos but bottom line I would never order American Woodmark again and if I am not mistaken - that is SHENANDOAH at Lowes?? I would definately choose Kraftmaid. Even the contractor guy said the vanity looked like match sticks!!!

It sounds a little odd in that increases are rarely so sudden, usually a supplier will let you know when an increase is coming so that retailers can avoid situations like yours. I did have an unexpected increase in the cost per item from an estimate I had gotten at another store for the same product. I called around and found that the store where I got my first estimate had used the wrong multiplier for the finish. We were buying Antique White which is considered a colour but they had used the white multiplier on my estimate. To figure it out I went to a third store and asked them to explain the difference. HD provides a pretty detailed summary I would get them to explain the change - was it the finish, the door style, the cabinets? I would also think about calling another store to see if they have had a price increase on the AW product.

Ajsmama, that trim looks great. Yes, DH gets OT. I think his job is pretty safe. But you never know. I'm back in school working toward a degree so I can go to work FT in a few years just in case! Update on my cabinets. My replacements came today. Everything looks good, except the replacement door came in without the drillouts for the hinges. Hey, I'm good, but not that good! I can't hang them by magic! Just met with my KD at HD on another issue. This guy is a doll. We designed something that the system took and charged me for, but didn't deliver. It can't be done. He figured out how to do what I wanted and they absorbed the cost. The fix was closer to what DH wanted to do anyway, so that worked out! Told the KD about the door and he said that was the wrong door then. I should get pre-drilled. Also brought in another door that I found a problem on at the hinge when I removed it from the box that was getting replaced. He agreed that needed to be replaced. Then I brought up about the hinges not sitting flush to the frame. Showed him what I meant and told him a number of them are so far out that I was able to put an envelope with two pieces of paper triple folded behind them. Others are out, but not as far. They are adjusted back as far as they will go. He is having the rep come out. He said there are too many issues with my job and he wants me to be happy. It seems to be largely the wall cabinets with issues. My custom sizes (made deeper) are fine/perfect. I have 3 3042 cabinets. Two of the boxes had to be replaced (chips, cracked frame). One door is now going to be replaced. The other box has hinge issues. The 3642 had to have a door replaced (our only finish issue) and 5 of the 6 hinges are markedly out of place. And so on. I am pleased with the customer service response. However, if we were on schedule with our reconstruction (and we aren't because we are fixing work previously done on the house) the cabinets would have needed to go in by now. We've got a little over two weeks before we're ready. Hopefully this will all be resolved by then!

American Woodmark according to its' voluntary reporting to Kitchen and Bath Busines is a 100% stock manufacturer (see link). Kraftmaid is a semi-custom line. Stock versus Semi-custom has nothing to do with the quality of the cabinet construction but will effect how verstaile the product is (semi-custom by definition should have more options than stock and more available finishes). Lines are quite different in Canada but I have never been that impressed with the construction specs for the Kraftmaid given the price point but the box stores here (Rona & HD) don't set up vignettes for Kraftmaid in store so I have never seen them in person. The stock lines at HD in Canada (by Fabritec) have better construction specs than both Thomasville and Kraftmaid IMO (quality construction in the cabinet is not the same as quality in the finishing). I think the finishing issue may come down to expectation. If your design was done using American Woodmark it can certainly be replicated using Kraftmaid but part of what you are paying for with Kraftmaid is the semi-custom versatility so I would want to be able to do things design wise I couldn't with the stock line (or what are you paying more for?). I looked at stock, semi-custom and custom and found I could get custom for what semi-custom would cost (this is very common in many markets). In our case we also found we didn't have to make very many compromises in our design to do it with a stock line for about a 1\3 saving (with comparable construction and materials between the lines). I have a kitchen plan from HD using AW, but haven't made the final selection. I think they are fine cabinets for those of us on a budget. My sister used the cherry chocolate glaze about 4-5 years ago and she still loves them.

We have the Shenandoah line from Lowe's and have been very happy with them. We also got the soft close and a few of their other bells and whistles but have not installed the blue motion yet. Plan to some day. The customer service was great and the cabinets arrived on time and any issues were dealt with easily. Ours are the Winchester maple with a coffee glaze.

We had Timberlake cabinets in our last home (new construction from a production builder).

We were very happy with the cabinets, but we had few of the available bells and whistles (I was kitchen naive at the time).

I can't comment on long term quality as we sold the house after only 11 months, but the were solidly built and the quality of the stain was good.

We've had Shenandoah (Breckenridge Maple Spice) installed for about 15months now and are still very happy with the cabinets. Customer service was outstanding and I think the cabinets are great-especially for the price. Our only 'upgrade' was plywood boxes (was actually pretty cheap) and that was because many of our cabinets have one end or the other showing and we wanted the real wood veneer.

We had one door that was not acceptable on delivery (big knot on one side) and a replacement was shipped out overnight for free. We also misplaced some special brackets for one cabinet and they sent us several sets for free (even though I was clear that WE lost them). A CS rep also spent a fair amount of time researching and helping me with some tough questions I asked them about environmental impact and manufacturing practices.

I would definitely use them again.

I'm glad to hear all these good reports. My AW cream glaze maple cabinets are due to arrive around April 7. So far I've been very happy with both the HD KD and customer service at AW.

Dian57, I am anxious to see your cabinets with just the cream glaze. As much as I really disliked the butterscotch AW when I first saw it, it has grown on me. I ordered some sample doors from both KM and AW with different glazes, but may just go with the plain cream.

The quality control on these cabinets is awful. We are building a home and there are so many defects! Replacements were ordered and those are defective as well. We paid for upgraded cabinets and they were NOT worth it.
