Old deck needs short term fix-paint or stain?

I have an old deck, probably as old as our 30 yr. old house, and it needs to be replaced. We don't have money to replace it now but hope to do so in the next 2-4 years. Right now it has mottled old paint and some rotten boards. We've replaced some of the redwood boards with some other wood (again short term fix). We'd like to do a little something with the deck so it will look better while we wait to replace it. I thought we'd power wash it and then either paint or stain it. Looks like staining is preferred but I'm not sure I want to do the extensive prep to make it look O.K. I'm not sure how efficient the power washing will be in taking the old paint off. I certainly don't want to be stripping it. So I thought I could just paint it but then I read unless you do like 2 coats of primer before painting, the paint will just chip off. Again, this is a 2-4 year fix. Any suggestions as to the best solution? Thanks a ton!
