Flooring for Screen Porch

I'm about to begin contruction on a 12x20 screen porch. I don't want the expense of pouring concrete. Therefore, I'm wanting to know what type of floor I should use. The porch will only be about 6" above the ground. I plan on painting the flooring with a marine paint. Don't want to leave 'gaps' in the flooring because I'm screening to escape the mesquitos. :) Also, so that water does not run under the porch, what should I use for skirting and how far in the ground shuld the skirting go?

I really like the idea of concrete or a paver for your base, esp seeing the porch is so low. -jasper

Oh, I'm sorry. Did you mean 6 feet or 6 inches above ground?

If you currently have a painted tongue and groove porch floor it probably isnt built with treated lumber- most composite decking materials are designed to allow water to flow through. Even the tongue and groove options aren’t waterproof. Additionally composite products require very close joist spacing (typically 12”) since the material has no rigidity. Finally many of the composite materials are slippery when wet- I suggest spending extra for a material like timber tech aged hickory. It has a brushed finish that is very slip resistant. Good luck!

The porch book I got said you can put screening under the wooden deck/floor to keep insects from coming up.

Hey Phyllis, did putting the floorboards close together do a good enough job of keeping the bugs out?

I'm about to have a deck installed just like yours and was facing the same question.

The company we are looking to hire does to tongue and groove floors to stop bugs from coming into the screen porch. They said putting a screen under the deck doesn't really work because they fall off or detiriorate over time and are hard to replace.
