Watering Bans/Swimming Pool Fill

We have signed a contract to begin pool construction and the digging is scheduled to start 5/1.

Our watering restrictions were just tighted and, at this point, we would only be able to fill the pool from 12:00 midnight to 10:00 am on even numbered days. I'm really worried that by the time the pool is complete that we will have a total watering band and we will have a pool with no water.

Has this happened to anyone out there? How long does it take to fill a pool? At this rate it might take a week to fill. Has anyone out there run a hose from their neighbor's house and paid their water bill? Any ideas and suggestions? I'm kinda freaking out.

We are under some very tight restrictions here in south Florida right now--BUT--filling a swimming pool is an exception and can be done at any time here.

Florida resident here also-
very strict water restrictions also
No problem filling pool.
In a worst case senerio, they could truck the water in for you, if needed. Many area do have that service.

I agree with garden fanatic. Roots need oxygen for normal metabolic processes & roots that formed in soil would be unable to absorb enough oxygen if suddenly thrust into a water environment. It's possible that they might adapt, with all soil removed, but that doesn't seem to be in the offing here. Though roots form readily and often seemingly more quickly on many plants propagated in water, the roots produced are quite different from those produced in a soil-like or highly aerated medium (perlite - vermiculite - seed starting mix, e.g.). Physiologically, you will find these roots to be much more brittle than normal roots due to a much higher % of aerenchyma (a tissue with a greater percentage of intercellular air spaces than normal parenchyma). Just as roots formed in soil are unable to absorb sufficient oxygen from a water environment, roots formed in water are poor at absorbing water in a soil environment. If the plants were to be set in a reservoir of water (the pool) & remained saturated for more than a couple of days, anaerobic bacteria in the soil would multiply rapidly & rot the roots. Al

I emptied out the pool gradually on the front lawn with no ill effects to the grass. When water accumulates because of rain, the L.A. County (think this who it is) comes once a month and sprays the water to kill mosquito larvae. If you owe a house, they already take out a fee in your house taxes for the abatement program. He said the spray was safe (right). The original plan was to fill in the pool, but the agent said that permits are required and if you do it on your own w/o permits and get caught, it will cost lots of $ and a long time to fix. I also used mosquito dunks and mosquito fish in the pool, but mostly immediately empty it out after rain because I don't want them spraying anything. Good luck.

There is a product out there if you need ideas. Something like Floating pond islands. It's a plastic tub (like the dish pan) with holes in the bottom, and suspended by a foam "Lifesaver" around the outer edge. Depending on your DIY ness, you could probable make the Lifesaver out of that pink styro. I wouldn't use the white/pellet styro, as once the pellets get loose, you'll never be rid of them. Just a caution with the Koi pond conversion. you pool filter is built for Chlorinated water, not pond water. It would require an upgrade to really filter a koi pond. If you want to go for the conversion, I would suggest koivet.com, in the message boards, for some people who have done it. I used lake and well water and it cleaned up within a day or two. They put in a bunch of Chlorine, Acid and a substance the causes the metals to stay suspended. I add well water monthly in the winter months and I just make sure I add this metal suspension chemical each quarter. When I add well water the pool will turn yellow for about 8 hours and then it goes away. I have a white plaster surface and it does not have iron stains on it. I can relate to what you are going though. If you had been near my pool water right after the pool was filled you would want to drain it and start over. I could not see the bottom and the pool had the smell of lake water. All this nasty water was made colorless but cloudy within 2 hours of the chemicals going in and then crystal clear within 2 days.

Our pool was built in a drought year in NJ when there were all kinds of watering bans but filling a pool was exempt as long as you filled it just once. Good Luck.

I don't understand why there would be a restriction on filling a pool. A pool can only hold so much water, so what is the difference if you fill it Monday at midnight or on another day? 20,000 gallons is 20,000 gallons no matter what time or day you fill it. You may want to double check those restrictions. Water restrictions here in our county are basically for watering your lawn. They don't want people watering their lawns everyday just to keep it nice and green, therefore they can only water on certain days and at certain times. But filling a pool is a one time thing aside from the occasional top off due to evaporation.

We used our neighbors water. We put the hoses in at 2 pm. We had one from our backyard, one connected to the washing machine spigot in the house, and one from our neighbors. We had it like that until about 8:30 when we had our neighbor turn it off. We then had 2 hoses until we went to bed, probably 10:30 or 11:00, and then only 1 hose during the night. When we woke up about 6:30 it was done. We paid our neighbor $10 for their water even thought we don't think we used that much. Good luck. Hope it all works out.

I have called our county water department and filling a swimming pool is not exempt from the watering restrictions. I'm not concerned about the restrictions as they stand now but the forcast for the summer is drought conditions. I'm concerned that we will have an empty swimming pool with no way to fill it.

I also live in SO FL and just filled my pool 5 days ago during the tight water restrictions. My PB called the city and the restriction is only for watering lawns and washing cars. I do have a 24,000 gal pool and it took 40 hrs to fill. I used two hoses non stop from my home. The guy who did the plaster said it didn't matter if I used 1 or 20 hoses from the same source (in this case my two outside faucets). He said the pressure is the same. I kind of disagreed and used two hoses anyway. I am expecting to pay between $100 to $150 more for water bill. Am I wrong in assuming this much/little money.
