Has anybody got any experience with Cabot's SPF on Ipe? My paint supplier is recommending it over the Australian Timber Oil. He says it provides greater penetration on Ipe and will last longer before recoating.
You would regret that more than anything you have ever done in your life. Your paint supplier is listening to the rhetoric being dished out by Cabot's technical staff. It is a horrible acrylic that will peel. So far, from what I have seen.. 100% of the time. It is VERY difficult to take off. I am extremely disaapointed that Cabot's continues to recommend this crappy product.
I used the SPF-48 last summer on a new Ipe deck. Followed the instructions, cleaning etc. to a T. The deck peeled in December after snow sat on it for 2 weeks. Now I have hired someone to sand it off and will refinish with Australian Timber Oil. Cabot's tech dep't claimed there were wood fibers in the tape pull samples I sent them, even though their cleaner for SPF says it "removes loose wood fibers." The areas protected from the elements (front porch, under eaves etc,) still look great. If anyone else has had problems with SPF I would like to hear from them.
All- Wish I had seen this before I did my cedar deck last Fall. I had exactly the same problem. I also sent a sample to Cabot and they said the same thing about wood fibers on the tape pulls.
They actually sent me 4 gallons of SPF36 (I had used SPF24) and 2 gallons of their wood cleaner. Not stripper, mind you, just the cleaner. I have been spending hours looking through posts - thank you pressurepros for all of your responses in threads- I will likely be purchasing some of your Ready Seal in the near future...
I have (almost) completely stripped my deck with a pressure washer and good hard scrubbing. Next will be to brighten and sand. Almost all of the old Cabot stain came right off with the pressure washer. What was left came off pretty easily if it soaked in water for an hour or so and re-hit it with the pressure washer. There are areas where the Cabot actually worked as it was supposed to- mostly hard spots (around knots, routed corners) and it really looks nice. Too bad 99.9% of the deck stain failed.
If you enjoy stripping finishes and watching mold grow beneath your peeling deck stain, Cabot SPF is for you.
