Room Color Flow Question

Colors on main level are primarily: burgundy, mocha and brown. Walls are neutral/beige.

Navigation through the home:

Front doors open to library (green velvet sofa, burgundy berber style carpet, dark wood furniture). This is not my room, but it is very similar (back wall is beige, opposite wall from couch has bookcases). Sofa is very similar in color, but not design.

Hallway is beige with wood trim.

Guest bathroom has a wallpaper design very similar to this:

Then we come to the living room which looks like this:

It opens up to the breakfast area and the kitchen (please excuse the dark photo):

Want to add a bit of punch to liven up my living room, but I'm not sure if this works. Would it clash if I repainted the living room to look like this: (The walls are denim blue/gold)

If so, what are some great color choices to create a dark/light contrast that will coordinate? Willing to paint a contrast wall in that breakfast area too if it will help create a better transition.

Maybe you could do the opposing walls in the LR & breakfast room the same color while the side walls in both rooms remain the same color. Say, fireplace wall and breakfast wall adjoining the kitchen in a navy and the side walls in a gold? Keep the partial wall the same color as the side walls. Or just paint the fireplace wall the blue color.

I know SW Restrained Gold & the color lighter have been used a billion times but it's for good reason. SW Dromedary (?) is really nice too. Then there's BM Pittsfield Buff HC-24 or Powell Buff HC-35 w/ Van Duesen Blue HC-156. They're great colors and pair wonderfully w/ greens, burgandy and blue! Then toss some navy pillows on the green sofa in the library.

Use art on the walls in both rooms that has Navy in it - maybe navy mats w/ black and white photos. Not sure what your art preference is but just an idea.

No, I don't think it would clash at all.

However, keep in mind that only ONE wall in your "blue-wall-photo" is painted in the denim color. The other walls are pale yellow. If you did several walls in the denim color, it might "eat up" (absorb) the light, and the room might seem dark and dreary.

Personally, I am a big fan of "try it." I get a whole bunch of SOMETHING (anything) in the proposed color, and take it into the room and see how it behaves. Then, I get several shades of the paint and paint big squares on my target wall. Then I look at it for a day or two.

But I don't always follow my own advice. I recently painted my kitchen THREE times before I got it right. ;-)

Several of the above descriptions are precisely what I did. I used the art and my Oriental rugs as the starting point. My wood work and trims are the same color in the whole downstairs. I consider the trim and doorways to be picture frames for the rooms. I also have an old home...1890. The doorways are large and you can stand in one area and see into the next rooms. I have 12 ft ceilings which also allows for more vibrant use of color and wide trims. All flows and all contents of the rooms can be moved/swapped into an adjacent room with no break in the color/design concept that I originally initiated 10 yrs ago. I have swapped the DR and morning room and it works very well due to the cohesive color scheme. My walls were painted 10 yrs ago and 6 yrs ago ( different rooms) I have never tired of the rich tones...navy, chocolate,thyme green, terra--cotta in multiple tones and a 3 tone yellow for the entry way and music room. Everything is tied together with the art work and rugs and the wood floors. I will link to my album and you can view the areas if you wish. To mry193--YW, mry. Go ahead, take the plunge! Easy for me to commit you to all this agony, eh? :-) It is hard,sometimes, but it's fun, too, and so gratifying when you get something right. But that's the thing, as in cooking or buying a blouse we think is going to be absolutely perfect with "those" slacks...no matter how much practice we have, we all make mistakes now and then. We get "it" home and it doesn't look right, even if we have years of practice and have successfully executed color schemes before. So I say, don't be intimidated, jump in and when you mess things up, you can do what I still have to do often enough (even after thirty years, two apartments, one rental, five owned homes and probably, counting renos, a couple dozen color schemes): repaint or change the shower curtain. :-D What are you picturing in your mind's eye? What kind of colors do you see in your dream scheme? To hoosiergirl: Ditto your agent; you built a beautiful home, and I love the way you put everything together. [For skeet, if you see this and look at hoosier's pics, the very first photo I saw had a good example of the visual linking. Look at the way the finish on the door on the left side relates well to the floor color on the right, even though the wall colors are different and there's a different (carpet? rug?) color between the door and the other room's floor. So, even though the two areas are different, they're tied together with the same undertones and similar finishes.] To hoosier, again--That's a lovely kitchen, and you seem to have done a much better job than I have in using what look to be almost the exact same colors/tones (as nearly as I can tell from pics) in our kitchens. Aghhhh! Help me, hoosier! LOL I agree with you. We built this house not quite four years ago. The hardest part was picking the paint. I'm happy with a lot of the house, but so far I've repainted the kitchen twice, and as I noted above, I'm having to do it again. I hope I get it "right" this time! I was happy to see your cabinet color used with black appliances. That's what I have, except for the cooktop and fan (SS). I am struggling to get some cheer/energy in this room. The main difference is that I have the wooden cabinets on the perimeter of the room and the (soft) white cabinetry on the island. Do you have decent natural light in that kitchen? Mine's okay until about 2 p.m., then it gets dreary. There's a LOT of wood in here, with the cabs, the plank floors (a little darker than your tile, but the same reddish undertone), and a farmhouse table. There's a lot of warm painted furniture (chairs, pie keep, a linen chest), but it's still a heavy room. The walls were originally some kind of off-white (maybe...BM Ballet?). I thought it would be nice, because of all the (Early American) colors in the furniture, but, no. I think the white had too grey a base. Then I hand-mixed a soft green that looks close to the same hue as yours, except a bit lighter. I thought I liked it, but it became draggy as the weather got greyer. I also used matte, and maybe that was a problem. So...now I'm going to try a warm white (something like BM Navajo or Calming Cream) in *eggshell* on the walls) and a lighter, warm gold (like Marblehead Gold or Dorset Gold) on all the doors and trim. Like your house, there's a lot of trim/millwork. The palette on this floor mostly comes off of BM Philadelphia Cream/Guilford Green/Palladian Blue/Goldfinch. That's a beautiful fan hood, btw. Maybe warmer metal finishes would help around my kitchen. Anyway, nicely done!

Fly, I repainted over the FH W/ the next darker color Baby Turtle. I still love it after 2 yrs.! To answer your question: no I do not have the sky blue ceiling in any room that has obvious color on the walls. Personally I do not care for colored ceilings in rms. w/ colored walls UNLESS there is substantial crown moulding around the ceiling. Especially if the moulding is a white or lighter version of another color. My eye just needs a place to 'rest' between colors. The blue ceiling also serves to tie together all of the downstairs rms. as they all have robin's egg blue accents in them. If there is no substantial moulding or none at all then I like white or cream walls w/ a colored ceiling. I am thinking about painting my DR ceiling (wall color is F&B Green Blue) a nice goldish/tan shade & installing thicker crown moulding. Also considering doing the same thing in our MBR but w/ reversed colors of the DR.
