Pros and Cons regarding Earth Boxes?
Comments (2)I have a bit different perspective in that I don't share the same list of pros/cons. In my experience it may be a myth that EBs require less frequent watering. It depends on the size of the container. For example if I grow a large tomato plant in an EB I end up watering more often than if I grow 2 large plants in a whiskey barrel half. If I get the barrel on sale I can get them for around $15-$20 which is less than an EB. I also wouldn't regard the EBs as portable as they weight a ton filled. On a deck/patio if one has the wheels they are OK, but lifting them is not to be taken lightly ;) I also have never had one bow out at the sides. Anyway, the disadvantage of them to me is simply the way they look. They aren't particularly decorative though there are expensive alternatives that are a bit more attractive. The primary benefit is it eliminates a lot of mistakes folks make such as improper/inconsistent watering and if the fertilizer strip is used it eliminates the question of how often and how much....See MorePros/Cons of Pavers vs Concrete Decking
Comments (4)If this is for a pool deck, if the pool is a fiberglass shell, the 3' around the perimeter needs to be concrete with rebar tied to the shell and embedded in the concrete. This provides a more stable weight to hold the pool down if it needs to be emptied for service. I have seen pop ups because this wasn't done. It cost almost as much as a new pool being installed to fix. I have seen pavers added after. I don't like it when pavers are on top of the deck. The water level and the deck level are too great for my taste. As for liner and gunite pools, proper compaction is so critical. Done well, the paver installation will last and last without too much maintenance. Finding someone that installs them right may be difficult and when you do, I guaranty you will pay more for the installation. Pavers can get just as hot a concrete deck because they are concrete. Travertine tends to be cooler. Sealing it can make it very slippery when wet. Stamped concrete can also get slippery when wet after sealing. Adding anti-slip aggregates to the sealer such as sand, will just get you road rash when you slip. Safety covers on a pool with pavers or travertine have special needs that will increase their cost. See the contractors work before putting dollar number one down and signing off. Hairline cracks happen because concrete shrinks. Settlement cracks can be avoided usually if the prep work is done. Hairline cracks are not normally a big deal because they don't keep growing. Settlement cracks may widen. Scott...See MorePros & cons - floor to ceiling windows?
Comments (33)I lived in an apartment that had 14 foot ceilings and between the high ceilings and the orientation of the windows (directly behind the seating area), the size of the windows (jibs that opened all the way to the floor) and the presence of a boardwalk style walkway right outside these windows, --we both felt kind of vulnerable sitting there watching TV. I would have felt much better had they maintained the other entry door to the apartment because the room would have been oriented in a way to better "protect" the occupants. (I lived in the back parlor of an 1840ish house that had stepped out onto a piazza, and the back had been dug out, thus the boardwalk) Conversely, the lofted portion of this room which had a 6'7" ceiling was oppressive to sit in because the ceiling with it's heavy mouldings seemed to press down on one's head. We were much more comfortable in the apartment we owned on a higher floor that had ten foot ceilings with an entry door down a 20 foot hallway. A large amount of space was dedicated to this hallway, but it really made the difference having this Inside the apartment rather than Outside the apartment as a public hallway even though we would have been the only ones using it regularly. That apartment really felt like a house in comparison. The similar things that I don't care for in McMansion type design are the undifferentiated space, furniture floating in positions that don't feel protected, rooms that are only irregularly contained by walls, and have amorphous boundaries. I personally find rooms that I can't define by a known shape unsettling....See MorePros and Cons on metal roofing...
Comments (16)Depending upon the type of metal roof, it should last a lot longer than shingles, but will be more expensive. Not sure, but you should be also able to lay insulation down between the metal roof and your decking if desired. You’ll need to check on that if you want to pursue it. Makes it a little better with ice dams in winter. Problem with metal roofing comes at Christmas if you want to put lighting up there. It gets slippery, but bust open a bottle of Sprite and spray it around and the roofs gets sticky until the bees clean it up....See Moredakota01
