Small pool and/or small yard - please share here!
Comments (29)For anyone out there looking for ideas on a small pool. Go to the blog "Our New Pool Build in Jacksonville, FL" We call it a Spool or Social Pool. It is approx 10 X 20 and it will be fully screened in. The wife designed it and it will have a water fall, bubbler and 2 external boxes for statues spouting water. It is 3.5ft to 4.5ft and have 2 seating / lounging areas. We went this route because we like entertaining and did not care to be swimming and diving, just hanging out. Take a look and let me know your thoughts. Thanks...See Morepool right off a hill
Comments (12)Retntion wall would be a wall that supports the fill behind the pool. kinda like a short retaining wall (same thing). tmgalleger. What do you want a pool for? You already have a 'gator' pit. Post a side view pic from the house on back showing the slope. I am not thinking you would need or want a vanishing edge pool, My knee jerk response would be to put up a fairly high retaining wall. Something that would go about three feet above level grade at the back of the house. Build the pool at grade, then back fill and level That would give a finite end to what looks to be an endless yard. You could put a set of stairs going down th back to get to the gator pit. Does your local code require the pool to be fenced? If so some wrote iron and a gate or two would be needed....See MoreRight now I envy those with small families.
Comments (17)With any crowd over ten, traditional goes out the door and a buffet comes in. Main prep foods like the turkey and hams are carved either before it is brought to the table or someone is elected to do it at the end of the table according to each preference. Everyone brings a dish of some kind and the table can be set up, decorated and dishes/plates/bowls ready to fill if needed. If brought ready to serve it is put in the fridge or warming oven. A smaller table with styrofoam or royal chinet and usually real silverware and napkins is set up along side the food table. After a quick clean up (have a large garbage bag handy, not classy but it gets the job done quickly) desserts are usually brought out. Put out the coffee urn. Tea in the kitchen unless there are more tea drinkers than coffee and it will be reversed. Sit back and relax with your guests. I also cannot believe there are no offers for help. Most places I have been we fight to see who gets to wash or dry!!! and that is without waiting for the hostess to start....See MoreWeek 177 - Big or Small - Battle of the island
Comments (25)It has been a long time since I had an island and when I did it was pretty small, prep space only, no seating. It was useful but it was also in a kitchen that was segregated from the rest of the house so there was no “island as a central spot”. Since then we have had 2 peninsulas, one with an overhang, but never used it for seating, only prep. All of those kitchens were tight on counter space so the prep space of the island/peninsula was very needed. Our remodel plan has a large island (111 x 40) with no sink or cooktop and seating for 4. I can’t wait! It will be the divider between the kitchen and living room and open to the dining room and I think it will become a central gathering spot in the way a peninsula never would have (for us). Plus, we are tripping over each other in our tiny workspace today, so having all that expanse to work at, in addition to a lot of perimeter counters, sounds like heaven to me! Every time I find myself short of space in the kitchen (baking cakes and cupcakes last weekend for the elementary school fun fair!) I find myself thinking “next year I can do this on the island!”....See Morehappymrsf
