Is there any way to prevent sheets from pilling?

Because they felt so wonderful when I felt them at BB&B, and because the color is so oddly perfect with the EK Pumice walls of our bedroom, I bought some Wamsutta 300 Egyptian Sateen (color Canvas) sheets to make a duvet cover with.

Unfortunately, I've now read on Amazon that they have a tendency to pill (no polyester, though...?) and get rough after washing. Very bummed, since I've already taken out the hems on both sheets and definitely can't return them.

Is there any way that I can wash these to prevent the pilling that a reviewer talks about? I'm also wondering if she's washing/drying them on HOT because they shrank a lot, too. Could that lead to pilling?

Thanks for any info on how to avoid pilling with these sheets. I had searched long and hard for a color that would go perfectly with the draperies and the walls and this is it, so I'd really like to be able to use these sheets/pillowcases for a duvet cover and shams and have them last for a good long while.
