Water Main Shut Off

My bathroom sink drips. I was going to replace the washer but I'm not sure I have the water shut off at the inside main. The kithcen sinks has no water coming out at all nor does the hot water in the bathroom but the cold water - the one I need to replace -_ is still dripping. If I leave the faucet open a trickle continues to come out. The hot water is dry. The toilet is not refilling. So what do I do?

I have to go out for a while but will check in later this evening. Thanks so much in advance! Cyndi

You've probably got it shut off - the dripping will stop. Look at it this way - do you think they make houses with partial house shut off valves? Now an uncoded remodel could do something like that but someone would be crazy to have a separate shut off for part of the house. Just turn the valve on and see if water comes out....

You'll need to open a faucet at the lowest point in the house and the highest point, which will allow all the water to drain out.

A word of caution... If there is a water shutoff in the meter box or on the meter assembly it may belong to the city. If you break it be ready to bend over for what they will charge to repair it. Regardless, during the impending repair replace the failed valve with a 1/4 turn ball valve and add another valve inside the house where the water service enters.

What type of valve? Did the valve handle fail or did the end of the valve stem break off? Is there enough valve stem to operate the shut-off with a pair of pliers? A picture or two might help.

I just became confused on this too. You should have a line in and then at each sprinkler valve a line that goes to that zone. Where does the line on the out valve lead to? Do you have another set of valves somewhere? Could that be used to siphon out the lines? (being in florida Im not familiar with set-ups to drain the lines)

If you installed everything right, didn't have any parts left over, and ordered the right cartridge and it's in the right position, it could be a few other reasons, broken washer, corrosion inside the diverter, faulty cartridge or faulty valve, etc, you can always call Moen customer support, and if nothing works call a local plumber.
