Dual sink with garbage disposal install

My husband installed a dual sink with the garbage disposal on the pipe side. Dishwasher is on the left side. Are the pipes and hoses set up correctly?

Is the hose from the air gap to the garbage disposal too long? Should it look more like the blue line? Should the dishwasher hose sit more like the red line?

Should the pipes have been set up like blue lines?

The drain line from the dishwasher is fine but I see three code violations on the sink & disposal drain lines.

1. The two drains are connected by means of astandard sanitary tee. Code requires a baffled tee.

2. The P-trap is too low, which resulted in installing an 1-1/2" vertical offset on the fixture arm. Code requires a 1/4" per foot downward pitch from the trap weir to the vent.

3. No cleanout. Code requires a cleanout on the upstream end of all drain lines. If you have a removable trap removing the trap will serve as the cleanout but when the trap is glued in you must install a cleanout on the line.

I can certainly understand why he installed the unit in that manner, but there is a much simpler solution.

First off, get a "disposal type" end waste or center waste kit. When installing a disposal type kit you begin by discarding the 1/4 bend (90 deg elbow) that is supplied with the disposal unit. The disposal type waste kit will have a cross tube that has a flat flange on the end. That tube is then installed on the disposal in the same manner as the 1/4 bend, but the line will no come away at the same elevation as the disposal discharge port. You then shorten the length of the tailpiece on the opposite sink and connect the two lines together with the "Baffled Tee" that is supplied in the disposal waste kit. In this configuration the tee is higher permitting the P-trap to remain at the correct height to provide the required pitch to the fixture drain line.

In the configuration in the photos it would probably be best to install a disposal type center waste kit. This would then put the tee midway between the two sinks.

You would then have to cut the fixture arm near the wall and install an 1/8th bend (45deg sanitary elbow) and extend the fixture arm out towards the center where it will meet the P-trap tail piece.

It is important that you extend the fixture arm from the wall to reach the trap. Code prohibits adding an extension tailpiece on the P-trap.

From your pictures, the new P-trap goes at the bottom and extends to the wall?

I got the sink installed, it took longer then I thought it would. Getting the old one out was a piece of cake. The granite double bowl sink fit perfectly but mounting clips were a nightmare. I thought I could use the one I had taken off the old sink but plastic portion had crack. I got new ones but they didn't work neither did any of the mounting clips I bought. After wasting a day on this I finally called Swanstone and they sent me the ones I needed. I had been told that most people don't even bother with them, they just use the silicone to keep in place. I had put the silicone on first as instructed so it was already sealed by the end of the first day. I tried to use the clips that Swanstone sent me but after spending 45 minutes on one clip. I ended up using the silicone on the underside to make sure there were no leaks from the counter. Day two, I finished hooking up the lines and trying to seal the basket strainer drain and disposal flange. You'll not allowed to use plumber putty on anything just silicone which does take time to dry. Not being the patient type, tried to rush the process and ended up having to the whole thing over. Day 3 was hooking up the garbage disposal and the rest of the pvc plumbing parts. I can't tell the number of trips I made to the hardware store for parts and to have some of those parts cut for me because I suck at it. The last headache was the p trap that kept sliding down when it filled with water. I thought I got it until I ran the dishwasher and it leaked again. So I used teflon tape and really tighten it, so far so good. I did get a waste king garbage disposal that didn't work with the nice disposal flange I had gotten because it was an ez mount and not a 3 bolt that I had expected. Thank goodness, I found this out before I had bother to install the sink or it would have been a really big mess. I did have to replace the Opella with Trim to the Trade but it turned out much nicer. For the main sink, I got a commercial grade oil rubbed bronze sink strainer drain.

On the one hand it can be argued that there is only one prescribed manner to install a center waste or end waste kit and any attempt to circumvent that is hack work at best. On the other hand, it can also be argued the if the drain, waste & vent piping under your sink contradicts with the placement of a trash can, then it is the trash can that needs to find another location. Now in regards to your question about piping the smaller bowl directly outside to conserve water: Only in California would people intentionally pour bacteria laden effluent on their garden or repeatedly starve the watercloset flush volume on the notion that they must conserve water, then in the next breathe demand a 200 or 300 gallon soaker tub or a shower with 4 to 8 shower heads and body sprays and not give that water consumption a second thought.

My husband and I were just discussing this the other day, if we had it to do over again, we wouldn't. I don't really cook the kind of meals that need a lot of "disposing" and my garbage is picked up twice a week. I don't think it is worth the sometimes smelly unpleasantness. It probably is more likely to smell if you hardly ever use it, as in our case. I only got it because I replaced the one that went on the fritz after 16 years. I should have just ditched it then and could have gotten a different kind of sink but that's a whole other story. I also don't like how much room it takes up under the sink.

put the electrical box in. Garbage disposals are well served by a seperate circuit (esp the better ones). Also that jbox on the dishwasher where the wires are is only for connecting the dishwasher, nothing else should be hooked up.

Yes, the tailpiece from the tee can be cut to the appropriate length to fit the input of a P-trap
