resurfacing pool deck

We are renovating our pool with Pebbletec, new tile and new decking. We are considering resurfacing the existing cooldeck with an acrylic product offered by our renovator. Has anyone had any serious problems with this method (acrylic)?

I would suggest that you remove the concrete deck and repour it. The various acrylic finishes are OK but I have never been real happy with the look after they are done. I've used several different finishes over cooldeck and I don't care for any of them (IMO). There are some great textures available with stamped concrete these days.

jagfan - are you in Jacksonville, or is it some other kind of jag? I had acrylic on my deck placed about a year ago, and my brother has had it for over ten. No problems, it's fairly easy to clean and cool on the feet. Whether you like the look or not is personal preference - I would have loved pavers, but have heard enough complaints about the sand and heat that we decided they weren't for us. You'll hear lots of opinions, but this is mostly a personal decision based on what you like.

A buddy of mine just patched up his pool deck this past spring. His was in slightly better shape than yours, but not much. He cleaned out the cracks and filled them in with a concrete patching compound, then used a concrete leveling compound afterwords. Worked out pretty well. Good luck.

I would charge you at least $8.50 for removal and then a stamped job. Removal is not as easy as it sounds and the grinding wheels are not cheap either. If you are in IN are you using elite crete brand by any chance? I love their products, they are headquartered there near Valparaiso I believe. Their colors have so much more depth than other brands we've used. Hope you can post pix when done. Did SW offer to do anything about the chipping? Take care, Barb

When our dog was getting too old to manage the steps on/off the deck, we built her a ramp and painted it with a similar product (some sort of deck resurfacer from a big-box store). Husband said the paint was thick and goopy, alot more difficult to spread than typical paint or stain. But it worked great, gave our dog (and us humans) good traction without being unpleasant underfoot. It's been three or four years, and still looks very good. But it's not cheap. Husband is considering re-doing our deck, and calculated that new boards would be about the same price as using this product. So instead we'll probably try re-staining it and kick the problem a few more years down the road. Good luck with your decision!
