Question about kitchen sink drain

Hi,

My husband installed a new sink drain a number of years ago. (I don't know the right words, but it came up into the sink.......with the collar on it that seals the sink).

Well, not too long after that the neck under that rim turned a funky color. Now, if I leave silverware too long in the water, that area can stain them. What happened? Thanks.

Hello, again!
I think you are saying that DH installed a new Âdrain basket.Â That will seal at the drain hole with the help of either plumbers putty or silicone caulk. Any ÂneckÂ might be under the sink. If you are looking at the inside, the Âfunky colorÂ could mean oxidation of the base metal.

Not all baskets are metal. Those that are, are often plated with a decorative finish. If the finish is damaged or non-existent, as with a utility sink basket, the metal would be exposed to the wash water. If your "silverware" is silver ware, it has a finish that is easily tarnished.

Tarnishing is usually so thin that it can be polished off many times over. But the process is the same as that of a lead-acid battery. In the sink two noble metals, such as silver and copper (alloyed in the basket) might be exchanging ions, or ÂtarnishingÂ or Âstaining,Â depending on what it is you actually have.

At least, this is an explanation based in science. Could that be "What happened?"

Thanks for your help.
No, I only have stainless steel silverware. If something lays across that drain basket, it can develop a multicolored spot on it, where it was touching. If it IS the basket's fault, does that mean we should have bought a metal basket?
Is is possible that its happening because of the composition of our water? (and the reaction with the drain basekt)? Are there any waters that actually cause this reaction, even with a metal basket? I haven't tried to get the spots out yet. I was afraid I'd permanently ruin the (not)silverware. Thanks for your help Pinoke.

Hello All - thank you for the nice words about our kitchen! XC60, yes, I like my fridge. It functions well, just be prepared -- it's loud! Just random clicks, pops, etc. Truly quite loud. But it is pretty! :) Since I posted this question the other day, I've started folding a pretty dish towel and placing it daily beneath the faucet handle. Amazingly, this one simple action keeps water from spreading all over the island and making a big, wet mess. I guess I'll just do this daily to make the splashes not that noticeable. Floors - to the person who asked about floors, I simply just picked out the color I liked at my builders office. Sorry that I don't know what it's called. My only rule of thumb, personally, after having had dark brazilian cherry floors -- get something not too yellow and not too red, and don't go super dark. Super dark floors are in fashion, I know, but mine at my old house showed EVERY single piece of dirt, fuzz, debris, etc. For a busy family, our floors hide everything and are perfect for us!

just wanted to follow up. I tried plunging again for quite a while to little improvement. I tried foaming pipe snake per my usual course along with good flush and more plunging. No noticable improvement. Anyway I went out to Lowes and Home Depot to check out what type of snakes etc they had. I had once attempted to snake it with a borrowed attach to your drill snake. Between it being a dumb snake design and me not being able to get it further than a foot into the tail of the drain I pretty much figured snaking wasnt possible and I hate wasting money. However after years of plunging every few weeks to restore minimal flow I was ready to take a $13 risk and I got a snake from home depot. See my theory was that with sufficient water flow and plunging I could clear most stuff. Well I was wrong. The new snake was a better design for the sink , one of the $13 steel housing hand crank models. Got it into the tail .. still had problems getting around a bend about a foot in but was able to get into the pipe this time hit what I thought was more bends thought I got snake caught at one point. However I ended up with a snake with coating of black gunk along with some very hard pieces thatended up caught in the small coil head. It looked like carbon or graphite almost. After a number of times running the snake back through (all 25' of it) and not pulling anythhing out really. I put everything back together and the sink drains like a champ now. Turn the water on full and it all goes down, no back up. WOW. I'm so glad somthing finally worked. I have no idea what exactly has been building up but I think I've at least puched a significant hole in it, or I punched a hole in my pipe. So perhaps someone can learn from my mistake. Get a snake. Use it. It will probably fix your problem.

Hi, Pauled99, I am not sure I understood your question exactly. It may be easiest for me to try to explain it in my terms. Both vertical pipes from the basement serve the same purpose they did originally. I just crossed them left-to-right before they came up from the basement. The leftmost copper pipe, which extends vertically from the basement and makes a right-angle turn to become horizontal and enters the galvanized tee in its middle port, only vents a sink in a bathroom in the basement. Obviously, the horizontal section is well above the flood rim of the basement fixture. The right copper pipe comes up from the basement, turns 90 deg to the right to become a horizontal drain (sloped at 1/4" per foot), turns vertical, and is teed into the stub-out for the kitchen sink with a sanitary tee. Above this tee, it is now considered a vent. It then turns 45 deg (remaining a "vertical" vent), and then turns 45 deg the other way to go into the bottom port of the galvanized tee. The vertical galvanized pipe vents both the basement and kitchen fixtures. In the basement, the two downpipes are joined by a sanitary wye below the point where the bathroom fixture joins the left-hand downpipe. The single drain then goes below the basement floor to join the main (?) house sewer line. After that picture was taken, I put steel plates over the stud notches to protect the pipes from screws/nails. The plumbing inspector took a look at the work, *briefly* thought about squawking about the galvanized tee before realizing it was strictly a vent at that point, and then admired the job and gave it a thumbs-up. If this explanation is not clear, feel free to ask a follow-up question. What I learned during this process is that the plumbing codes actually make sense, even if not at first to the uninitiated. For example, as a novice, I would have turned the drain for the sink vertically instead of horizontally, and teed it into the horizontal drain line. However, that would have made the section to the right of that tee into an illegal horizontal vent. Stuff that goes down the sink could splash to the right (i.e., upstream). Since there is no water flow there to wash it down, it could get lodged there and obstruct the vent. This was not obvious to the tyro, but makes sense to me now. Again, a thousand thanks to lazypup.

Thanks, Vith. The goal is to gain counter space to one side of the existing sink cabinet, and I thought we might gain enough by shifting the sink cabinet as far to one side as the existing plumbing (inflows) allows. We may end up moving plumbing anyway, but we're on a tight budget so I was looking at less costly options. But if I understand correctly, you're saying the drain could still be in the center of the sink; is that right? I like the fact that an offset drain allows you to empty the strainer without removing, say, a large baking sheet from the sink, so I may opt for the offset drain anyway. I thought it might also simplify the under-sink plumbing as well.

Yah. ThatÂs a tough call. Stainless Steel" comes in many grades and even the best of them is subject to Âoxidation.Â Then, again, a basket that is primarily plastic is not accessible to ionic exchange. I wish I could explain this, but the specifics of your water quality, the basket materials and the tableware alloy all have influence.

And so do other factors, such as the foods you prepare. Spinach is full of iron. Vinegar is a mild but significant acid. Salt can release metals. And so on. All of this is common water chemistry.

There are other things, too, which are common influences. Water hardness and even softness are chemical states. There are just too many variables to peg one of them as a source of a result.

When trying to solve a problem of this kind, it makes good sense to use the Âscientific method.Â That means you change one variable at a time and log the results. So, you may never know the reason, but if changing the basket to an all-plastic kind stopped the staining, the answer would be hidden in that dynamic.

IÂm certain, that if the tableware were changed to plastic, the problem would cease. Somewhere in the midst of all options is the relevant cause-and-effect.
