Ozone Generators

I am curious to see if people who have an ozone generator on their pool,are they finding there chlorine levels dropping to real low amounts. I have one and even when I have my in line chlorinator set at a high level, I still find my chlorine is dropping to almost zero. Right now I'm turning my ozonator off and letting my chlorine level off. When I have swimmers then I turn it back on.

Are other pool owners finding this same situation? Or am I missing something?

I have had an ozonator on my pool for three years and never had any problem maintaining CL. I have heard some reports that ozone will burn up FC, but that has not been my experience. I know there is doubt that they do any good but I have maintained my pool with 3-4 PPM FC all along and have never had any algae and rarely measure more that .5 CC. My CC is usually 0. I;m not sure is it works but I won't be turning it off any time soon just in case.

I too have an ozonator on my pool and having the same issue with very low chlorine levels. I have an automatic chlorinator installed, but the water is draining out of it within 30 mins, (only when running the ozonator). I have put pucks in the skimmers, but still have issues with low chlorine.

What is FC and CC?

I just purchased the Cuisine Clean veggie cleaner (ozone generating veggie cleaner). I mostly did it because I love, love, love fresh food and I even want to start gardening next year and an agitating ozone generating machine seemed like the best system for cleaning my food. When I first saw the unit, I suspected that the basket was made of plastic (which I usually avoid), but read that ozone eats plastic. I searched for a plastic free cleaner that agitates the vegetables, but couldn't find any with a decent price. So I took a chance and purchased this one and sure enough, the basket was indeed made of plastic. Here is the big question: Do I need to be concerned about phthalates and bpa because of the plastic in my unit or will the ozone destroy these toxins before my food absorbs it? If I am endangering my health because of these toxins, will rinsing them in a colander or glass bowl (after running them through the cycles) get rid of these toxins? I don't mind rinsing them, but if I have to wash them again, I wonder if it's worth the trouble. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm otherwise happy with the product. I bought some organic lemons yesterday that I cleaned with the unit. After one cleaning cycle, it turns out there was a detergent or some cruddy foaming mess that was on the lemons that the machine removed BEAUTIFULLY! I had to put it through a second cycle to get it all off, but now I have nice clean lemons. I just can't shake the fear of petroleum produced toxins in my food. Should I be worried?

You can also buy Ozium oxygen spray. I'll find out from my daughter where she gets it. I personally have not seen this product in a regular grocery or bix box store. I'm not advertising or spamming. I'll get back on this.

Wasted money, IMHO. Ozone is a great oxidizer. Most undesired organics that come into contact with it are rendered either inert or dead. That being said, it can ONLY augment some of what chlorine does. It is useless against algae and any biologicals that are stuck to the walls. It is only effective near the point of injection and a short distance there after. Chlorine will do the same thing, just in some cases slower because of the concentrations used. In many cases, chlorine is faster. Chlorine is still needed at the same level in the pool. Ozone doesn't last long enough to leave a residual in the pool. It can't be tested for. Ozone only works when the pump is on. A properly chlorinated pool has enough chlorine to keep sanitizing the water when the pump is off. Ozone systems need periodic servicing. Bulbs, hoses, valves, all need periodic replacement. This is on top of the initial and additional cost of adding them. Just my $0.02 worth. Scott

New product. I was just looking at the manual in pdf format. It's hard plumbed like an off line chlorinator. The Ozone will kill the free chlorine. It's chlorine cell doesn't appear to have a polarity reversal which means that it will scale up frequently in hard water. It has air filters that need to be cleaned. Four bulbs for Ozone will need periodic replacement. I don't think that enough water will pass by the ozone to make a difference in the water quality except to cause the free chlorine to combine with the ozone. Pools that turn off at night will cause it to read a fault condition. Del wants to be on all the time. So hooking to a relay in an automation system is out. My opinion is currently a "steer clear". If someone knows more about, I'll be happy to listen.

I'm guessing your ozone output is inadequate. If it were sufficient, it would be oxidizng and there would be little demand on the chlorine. It only lasts about 20 minutes in the water and that is why you need an alternative sanitizer residual. Your sanitizer demand may be exceeding your sanitizer. Check the conditioner level and ozone output.

FC= free chlorine. Chlorine that stands ready to kill.
CC= combined chlorine. Chlorine used up and combined with ammonia, etc.

CC is what gives the chlorine odor and irritation. Odor and eye irritation is not too much chlorine. It is inadequate amounts. Wipe it out with a dose that will deliver 10x the amount of CC.

Thanks for the update. I have checked my pool and the chlorine is currently at 3ppm. That's with the ozonator on. So maybe my pool has finally "normalize". I built my pool in October of 2007 and I have been chasing all of the items that you are suppose to check. But I have not been over correcting. So we will see what happens next.

It's a good idea to check FC, CC, PH, total alkalinity and CYA regularly (around once a week) and check TC and PH every 2 or 3 days. If your total chlorine (TC) is 3 ppm that may not be telling you the whole story. Your CC should be 0 which would give you a FC of 3, but if your CC is say 1 with a FC of 2 (TC=3) then you have a problem because your pool is fighting something. Frequent testing with a good drop-based kit lets you catch and adjust for problems before they become serious.

I agree with Tresw. There is no substitute for a good drop based test kit. It pays to test often. Your results will most likely be more accurate than any pool store test. Keeping on top of your chemistry will prevent many headaches and save $$$$$$.
