I love the desk. The only thing I see is the lamp, I like it better on top not (when the desk is open). I would move it to the top, and then move the pic a little to the right and down to form one grouping. If not, get rid of the lamp and leave as is. (maybe a tiny lamp would work where it is)
Do you need two throws? I like one and maybe the second on the couch. I would leave one chair without the throw.

I like the silver tray and flowers.

Ooh, maybe a stained glass lamp, sometimes they come in shapes. My mom has one in the shape of a turtle. You can put that on the desk.

I love the desk, but the lamp seems a bit oversized for it. I'm seeing this kind of vintage lamp for on the top of the desk. This was a freebie discard we got from one of those fabulous old 1930's era theaters my husband worked at, but it was so corroded that I had to painted:

Okay, veered off track for a minute. I assume the lamp is for reading so I think it works well as is. If it were on top of the desk I think it would be too high. However, even though the white shade relates to the white of the matt in the picture nearby, I wonder if an off-white shade might look better. Are the shades on your other lamps off-white? Hard to tell in the pic.

I think a throw on both chairs looks a little too "staged." I'd just put one throw on one of the chairs.

The items you're planning to add to the coffee table sound pretty but here's my concern. The table seems a lot lighter than everything else in the room. The items you're planning to put on top of it also will be very light (silver, white flowers, crystal). I think you might want to add some darkness to the top of the table to make it 'connect' better to the rest of the room. I hope that makes sense.

Finally, I'm not sure about the pillows on the chairs. They look comfy as is, and are people going to be able to sit on them w/ the extra pillow there, or will they have to toss them overboard? That's one of my pet peeves! Maybe a pillow or two on the sofa instead?

Then again, you could do nothing and I'd still love the room!

I think you are headed in the right direction, but here are a few thoughts:

The pix above the desk could be moved either up more, so there is a bit of 'breathing space' between it and the books, or down so that the books overlap it purposefully. Right now, it almost feels as if the pix is resting on the books, since it begins where they end.

I don't care for the lamp on the desk - it feels too bulky. Something smaller would be better (but I do like the lamp in general, just not there).

I don't think the white throws add anything. I would look for something with a little more color and subtle pattern. Right now the white ones on each chair kind of read like white sheets folded up, waiting to be put on the chair to protect the seat or something.

The one thing that really doesn't fit for me is the ottoman. I like the style, but in that room it becomes the focus, and eats up a lot of visual and actual space. It also feels really tall for the seating. I would love to see the room without it and see if the rest of the furniture takes on more importance when that is not there.

Love the rest of the room, the overall feel is just what you are wanting, I think.

Hi, I'm in agreement with Les. The ottoman is out of proportion to the seating. It dominates and takes away from the charm of the room. Is there another place in your home that you could use it? I think a smaller low antique looking tray table or glass topped would be much more suitable. I think the lamp on the desk is out of proportion too, you need a smaller one and I think the throws are disconcerting to the eye. You've done a wonderful job and the room is lovely. Perhaps the books with the bookends would look better on an end table. There's a lot going on at the desk which seems to be a focal point and a very nice one at that. Keep up the good work!!! BTW a nice paisley throw would look yummy. Could you tell me what paint you used for the walls? I have an English cottage home and I'm redoing a den. Love that color, lol

Okay... I didn't want to say too much about this before because you didn't ask about the coffee table/ottoman... but I don't think it works in the room either. However, if you had to keep it, loved it, etc... I think it could be made to work if you added, say, a dark-wood tray on top and a short stack of books or something. I also didn't notice how tall it was until Les mentioned it.

What a beautiful room! You have a great eye and you're definitely on the right track. I understand your wanting to bring in sime white, but your leather chairs are SO nice, I personally wouldn't want to cover them up. Although the pillows you describe sound hard to resist.

Also, I want to thank you b/c you helped me out w/paint not too long ago. I was desperate for a hallway paint color to go w/my chestnut trim woodwork. You posted a few pix of your rooms (I loved all of them), and it really helped me out. I went a shade lighter than your baby turtle, and it's perfect. Thanks again!

Oh, I love this room so much! The colors, the light, the wooden furniture and accessories in the corners, the entire arrangement, the pictures over the sofa. I would like to live there. I like the books and bookends right where they are, and the lamp is not too big, especially placed in the open desk.

I agree that the ottoman looks too large and the white throws on each chair not necessary. Maybe one throw and some pillows on the sofa? But nothing on those beautiful chairs.

sueb~I like your room so much. The throws don't work though. Before you said what they were, I thought you had pets and they were sheets or something. I thought, why didn't she take those out of the photo? LOL So I guess there's your answer.

I do like your ottoman and desk lamp, however, I can see where ivory shades would be a small improvement. I'm having similar concerns, hard to find exactly what you want without paying a fortune! I would so put my feet up on the ottoman, I just love wicker. I don't think you need any more pillows.

I agree that a dark wood tray would look cool, maybe with a silver or glass bowl of green grapes. That's all I think this room needs, a touch of greenery.

I don't mind the size of the lamp, as you need the light by the chairs, and you're not really sitting at the desk. I'd swap the shade for something less white, unless that's just my monitor. The coffee table does seem huge, but maybe a dark wood tray and something on it would break up the sea of light reeds.

The white throws don't add anything, to my mind.

Love the room! Love the white shade and throws for the summer months -- but consider switching to a black shade or perhaps red? -- along with darker throws.

I do like the ottoman -- but what if you brushed on dark gel stain? I do like the light color and feel for the summer months -- but perhaps a vintage trunk might work for the cooler ones?

I did look at some smaller ones while at Marshalls today. I will check out Lowes & Home Goods next time I'm there. If I put the lamp on top it becomes too tall & not cozy anymore. I really need a fair amt. of light in this corner as it is the only light on that side of the rm. W/ the other big lamps on the opposite side I need to balance it out.

And I still like the idea of adding white during Spring & summer so I thought 1 white one on the sofa & I found this B&W paisley one to put in the rm. also. My family always cover up w/ throws yr. round so they are always around. Nothing that nds. dry cleaned since they get so much use w/ us, kids & pets.

My sister found some gorgeous gray & white fleece fabric that she is making Euro Sham covers for for me. We use Euro pillows on the flr for the kids & pets.

W/ the addition of purple flowers I think it will look crisp.

The ottoman is actually my coffee table measuring in at a whopping 42"! I got it when our LR was in another part of the house & I do love it. I suggested to DH once about storing it away & using an old blanket chest I have & he said not a chance. Every inch of the surface is usually covered w/ kids books while they are awake but it all gets put away before bed & grown up stuff comes out (I love trays!). Speaking of which:

Sue: somewhere I have a dark tray that I've used in the past (see pic of trunk coffee table). Do you think an arrangement such as this tray would look better? My kids dinged up the tray & I think DH has it at work to refinish it. I'd really like to find a round tray though.

Teacats - you must know me so well by this time as I always switch out accessories in Spring & Fall! And what a good suggestion about switching it out in the Fall for the trunk! DH may agree to that.

I used to always have it decorated but since swapping rms. I've just never really gotten around to accessorizing it again.

Love the new throws you have added - much warmer and cozier in feel.

I do like the pix lowered over the desk. Now, move the books and bookends to the right a bit, so that they are not centered with the pix, but start on the right side of where they are sitting. A smaller pix over the top of the larger one could be very nice.

Where is that gold lamp with the black shade that you have in the last pix? That might be very nice on the upper level of the desk instead of the larger lamp. Otherwise, look for a floor lamp to use beside the desk, rather than something sitting on the desk, and add an urn of florals on the desk instead. A floor lamp like this might be great:

bronze swing-arm floor lamp

It could sit in the corner to the left of the desk, and then be swung over the open desk to give plenty of light. With a three-way 150 watt capability, it should provide plenty of light when needed.

I just wanted to say that I think you have a wonderful room. I love the feel of it- warm, cozy and lived-in. I hope that I can get that same feeling in my house.

By the way, Target sells a lamp similar to the one Les linked to (around $60; but it only takes a 100 watt bulb).

ttodd, your room is beautiful. I've been trying for a library feel for my own LR for years and this is great inspiration for me. And that looks like a nice front porch that can been seen from one of the pictures.
