A question: how wide are the groutlines? I'm guessing it's on mesh, so the lines are set unless you move the tiles? The glass-that-looks-like-MOP sample I got from glasstile.com has wider groutlines than I like, and I really wouldn't want to bother with resituating every single tile if I've ordered it on mesh to start with...

thanks guys. but to clarify: this is NOT mother of pearl. my very patient contact in the philippines tells me it is troca ...the inside of the shell. it's not as dazzling or glitzy as the MOP. when i got the samples i preferred this as it seems to have a much quieter presence and creamier color.

and i made a mistake: the panel is actually 4' x 6'. the shell mosaics are 20mm each (i think) and are set on tile, not mesh. there are no grout lines except a very fine line where each tile butts together.

unfortunately there's nothing else to show in the bathroom. the floor is still in progress. it's a 16" square porcelain and we will be bringing in our walnut flooring from the rest of the house so it will be a checkerboard. the vanity is stained cherry and the counter will be crema marfil marble ...with the shell tile as the backsplash on the entire wall. we'll also have two panels of the shell tile to each side of the entry doors with sconces set inside. i can't WAIT until it's done, so i will definitely post the reveal! thanks very much! please let me know if you have any more questions.

I wish i had more bathrooms to remodel :)I LOVE what you have done and it is worth all the trouble and expense.. I have not seen ANY bathroom on this forum with this unique material.

You know what is going to happen next? Copycats :) start a business selling shell tiles through ebay to forum members.

Fascinating about how the tile with wood is being installed. I wonder if Bill has ever done wood inlay with tile? So do they take out the pine pieces after the tile is set and install the wood? There must have been some interesting calculatin' goin' on there wrt different heights of tile and wood.

I imagine you've got a pretty watertight substrate behind that tile, yes? Because with no groutlines, it's pretty sure that water will get in there...I wonder what the Bill/mongo opinion is on butted tile in the shower?

pharaoh, there's nothing else you could have done with that bathroom of yours! it's perfect and certainly one of the most unique i've ever seen. thanks for the praise. coming from you it's a real compliment!

flyleft: the floor did take quite a while to figure out and i'm not sure how exactly they did it, but the different heights of materials did pose an issue. there is also an electric matt beneath, to further add to the difficulty. in reference to the substrate, there was a lot talk back and forth between my husband, the GC, the tile guy and the flooring guy and they came up with some solution -although i have no idea what that is. i just tell 'em what i want and they figure it out. i can say however, as the project nears completion i sense a whole new level of exhaustion and frustration in my GC. the man is just not comfortable thinking outside his box. ...or is it just thinking? sometimes i can't be sure. obviously you may sense MY frustration. it's been a long road. the walnut planks will go in place of the pine when the rest of the floors are being laid. our floors throughout the house are being finished with waterlox ...although i'm wondering if i should have them use the marine varnish on the planks in the bath.

My husband is a floor installer and has done the tile/wood lattice (what he calls it) look. He's wanting to replace the wood in my office with travertine and wood. I've always wondered how it's cleaned. Unless a steam mop is used for cleaning, what cleaning product can be used on both materials, be it stone and wood or porcelain/ceramic and wood?

monicakm: i've been wondering how to clean it for months now! i thought about steam too, but i don't think that's the best for the wood. i guess i've decided not to worry too much about it until i'm living in it!

LOL, well I guess it's moot point now! Maybe someone on the flooring forum can help with the answer. According to steam mop manufacturers, their product is safe on "sealed" hardwood. My office wood floor is sealed engineered hardwood. DH was/is totally against using the steam mop on it but I've been doing so for a couple years and it's fine. I just make sure to do it first before the mop head gets too wet.
