help with a bathroom update idea

Hope some folks here can visualize, I don't have pics, but need help. I have a long, bowling alley master bath, 11 foot ceilings, with tub on the left, nice long vanity with two sinks and plenty of room in the middle,a clear glass shower with brass trim on the right, then a private stall for the toilet. The previous owners put in chrome and brass faucets to blend with the brass trimmed shower. The tub, vanity top and shower back is creamy white marble tile. The lighting was not upgraded (still two brass strips with round bulbs on vanity, and two cheap ridged ball lights on ceiling), and still had wallpaper. I don't want to replace the faucets, but do want to upgrade the look. Here is a link to the faucet look:

I will be stripping wallpaper and painting BM Brookside Moss, which works with both the chrome and brass, and painting/gel staining the vanity base to look like the cherry flooring in the master bedroom. Adding a frame around the massive mirror, also in cherry with silver and gold flecks. Now - I have had trouble with lighting, figuring I would go chrome as it looks less cheap than brass - but I saw these on clearance today -

If you look at the bottom of the page, they have the vanity lights too. I would use two of the small chandeliers for the hanging lights. I can use gel stain to color the wood to what I want.

So what do you think? I was thinking a)I love these b)they would focus on the cherry tones in the vanity and mirror, and decrease focus on the brass/chrome combo,c)price is great and if I want to neutralize for sale, goes with any color. Or is my overdone taste taking control, and I would be better with plain chrome light fixtures?

Your Master Bath sounds like mine, except for the closed in toilet. Can you post photos? It will make it a lot easier for everyone to visualize.

I can tonite, if the red and leopard print wallpaper doesnt scare you - it was the last of my 80's phase :) - except I have never figured out how to post pics here - anybody got instructions?

Hey Gibby -- 6 x 10 bath here [finally demo'd last week!] and I know that my size isn't even that small. I've been on the lookout for 3 or so years and it's been surprisingly difficult to find ideas. Aside from "recess whenever possible," of course! There's the "monochromatic = more spacious" school of thought but IMO there are alternative ways to lead the eye around the room and create interest in a small space. Things to consider: * color / color contrast * the lines of an object (round vs square) * judicious use of oversized scale * having some consistency with eyelines/sightlines of your vertical elements Here are some of the apparently-smaller baths I've found that put at least one of the above into action: We're adapting this built-into-doorway cab for our bath -- ours will be built out from the wall, perpendicular to the sink, and serve as a med cabinet. I'd use a wall-hung if this were a full bath, but I do love this! [Note horizontal cladding] I was involved in this [5 x 8 with TWO doors!] bath: Grabbed space from kitchen to make this 15" cubby: IMO one of the biggest challenges with small baths is to create negative space that serves to set off what IS in the room. In our case, we splurged a bit on a demilune/semicircle vanity instead of a square or rectangular one -- given our bowling alley dimensions, it helps carve out some pleasing curves. However, having lived in a place where the tiny wall-hung sink, toilet, and clawfoot were all accessible from one spot I know negative space is sometimes non-existent! I've enjoyed the book below, which has a mix of sizes and lots of materials in it --"ideas for tiny half-baths, medium-size his-and-hers, and large, luxurious home spas. Check out Golden Leaf granite slabs in your area. It has browns, black, gray - all touches. I have it in parts of the kitchen and in the laundry room. Looks great with cream, stained pine, french gray island, etc. I know it's hard to tell from pictures on the internet, but this is close to what mine looks like IRL. Some images appear "golden" but I've never seen any IRL golden. The gray doesn't show up in online pictures. Your more likely to get water stains on marble in bathrooms. My parents have several bathrooms full of marble (floors, showers, tub surround) and they have it resealed regularly. Can you post a picture of your room? Here is a link that might be useful:

I see no need to update the vanity and fixtures. I like the floor tiles. I would not do blue accent tiles in shower if you think you will one day replace the floor. As far as paint, I could see a pale yellow or pale blue on the gray side ( not baby blue).

I looked at Home Depot Countertops today and ended up looking at... laminate. It might be just fine, and I don't want to overspend on this project. I have plenty of other projects to take care of too! Here are some that I like. But I am not sure what direction I'm going in style-wise? Do we call this transitional? Formica Fantasy Marble (matte) The contract is less and the color is more warm gray in my sample Formica Classic Crystal Granite (this Houzz photo is stunning, I love it.) And here is a third, Formica Spring Carnival I like both. The Classic Crystal has a glossy textured finish, while the marble is matte and might be a little more current, finish-wise. What do you think? I am trying to imagine with a vessel sink, and I am thinking of maybe doing this antique gold color for fixtures instead of chrome. Mini pendant lighting And maybe a Delta Trinsic Faucet with the rectangle sink?

I'm dying to see your pictures. I am going through a bathroom update also. Sorry I can't help you with the pictures. I was able to post a few about a year ago and from then on following the same instructions it just came up typing, so I switched to using links to Webshots.

I am so happy to get rid of the "Hollywood" light strips. I wasn't thrilled with anything at the big box stores and found tons of stuff to choose from on eBay. I am waiting for the one I ordered to come any day now. You would be surprised at all the different finishes you will see besides chrome, brass & brushed nickel. Easy to find something that will harmonize with the fixtures you are keeping.

I plan on shopping eBay for the vanity faucet also. We are moving away from the polished brass (except around the shower enclosure) and hubby already spray painted all the fixtures (towel bars, tp holder, heating vents, light switches) in an oil rubbed bronze. They turned out very well.

Your paint color sounds like a shade of green. Co-incidentally I have chosen a muted green also. One GWer suggested that it is a bad color for a bathroom because it is bad for the complexion. I had to laugh, though, the wallpaper hubby tore down was in shades of green and I have had this bathroom for over 15 years and never noticed anything wrong with my complexion!

We'll have to share some photos.....because of special orders on my countertop and also waiting on a shade I don't expect to post photos for another two weeks or so.
