Salt-free water conditioning
Comments (25)I enjoy the harsh scientific threshold here. Am looking for a whole house conditioner, "softener" and pure drinking water solution that removes chlorimine and fluoride. Just wondering is the study done at Arizona State University at http://www.uswatersystems.com/pdf/ArizonaStateUniversityWaterSoftnerStudy.pdf considered non-scientific proof? Or is that not up to the standards of testing that you all require for proof? What testing would meet the requirements? When a tester comes to your home and does a test for Hardness, VOCs and ph balance is that not factual of what you have? Or is that some kind of bias slant to have them tell you which system you need? This is a very confusing process....See MoreWell Water Condition System
Comments (4)"How often should I regen if I have iron in my system?" With iron I'd say every 4 or 5 days and you'd need to do routine maintenance with Iron Out or a similar product. "Should I go with the two tank Softener? if so, do I need two control valves? If not, then how does the 2nd regen?" You'll be fine with a single resin tank softener regenerating at 2AM unless that poses a problem for you. "Would I still need the Acid Neutralizer if I get a new system?" Your PH is low so a neutralizer is indicated. Make sure they supply a tank with a top dome plug so it's EZ to add media when necessary. "Is resin cleaner the same as Iron Out? How often should I use it? Do I just pour it in the canister? Which one?" Resin cleaner is Iron Out or Super Iron Out and you can buy those locally and use them yourself. I'll post an EZ regimen when you decide what to do. "Should I move my Hot Water heater closer to the system?" Why? "Using the calculations in these threads, I will need a 48K Softener. Is that the same for all tanks?" A 1,5 cu ft softener may be correct but the neutralizer will increase the hardness the softener must remove so that has to be considered. You may require different tank sizes for the different apparatus because the different media has different characteristics. "What system would you recommend? My wife is always complaing about the laundry, showers, etc. So I want to do this right the first time." Sounds like you found a local water treatment pro that knows what they are doing. Call a competitor and get other quotes and details on the recommended hardware and post them here. "I will have 2 bypasses for this system (factory and 3-ball)." A VERY good idea....See MoreNature's Miracle Water Conditioning System??
Comments (2)Nature's Miracle water conditioning System is NOT a water softener. It is a water conditioner. Water coinditioners DO NOT SOFTEN WATER. To "soften" water is to remove calcium (among other things like iron) from the water and that is commonly done by one of two methods. One method is ion exchange as done by a water softener. A water softener exchanges either sodium ions (if using NaCl) or potassium ions (if using KCl as a SALT SUBSTITUTE) for calcium (and other) ions in the hard water. That's it, no ifs, no ands, no buts, and no sales double talk. Simple chemistry and physics. Softening water is not black magic. It is physics and chemistry with a side of mechanics. No matter how hard sales people try (and want) to they can not violate the laws of physics or change the nature of chemical actions and reactions. The other is by a filter, but no simple filter will remove calcium. You would need a reverse osmosis unit large enough to service your entire house. You would not want to pay for that big an RO nor pay for the service and routine maintainence it would require and RO water would be very agressive in your plumbing and it would waste a lot of water. NO magnet(ic) gizmo or electronic gizmo or "conditioner" will soften water but people waste their money on them EVERYDAY. Check out this URL for one story http://www.nmsr.org/magnetic.htm and there are many more on the net if you Google. Pick the right softener (not a box store brand), size it properly for your water conditions and usage and the SFR of your plumbing, and get a competent install and you should go 15-20 years....See MoreConditioned water smell and taste
Comments (2)Clearly, you have problem water. How were the tests conducted? With a titration kit? With test strips? Did you do them yourself or use a certified lab? What is your water source - city, private well, if city is it surface water or well? It may be that you have a buffering effect happening in your pre-treated water. Once components are removed, it makes your pH worse. For right now, STOP using the softener - if pH is actually that much lower after the softener, you will ruin your pipes quickly. Get your water tested by a certified lab. You may actually want to send them two samples, one before and one after the softener. Test for: pH, TDS, hardness, iron, manganese, sulfates, nitrates, bacteria, alkalinity. If your numbers are accurate, even your raw water pH is too low and should be addressed prior to softening....See MoreUser
