Install ledger on siding?

I know you are generally not supposed to do this, but here's my deal - I want to add a small porch onto the back of my 1926 house. There is no sheathing - just the 1x10 redwood shiplap siding installed directly on the studs. Experts advise cutting back the siding and mounting the ledger to the rim joist THROUGH THE SHEATHING (with care given to flashing, etc.) The main concern about going through the siding (especially vinyl) is that it compromises the connection between the ledger and the rim joist. But in my case, wouldn't putting lag bolts through the siding to the rim be essentially equivalent to putting them through the sheathing? I would install the ledger about 1/2" proud of the siding with washers, to allow water to flow down, and of course seal the bolt holes and flash the top. Any thoughts on this?
