Spiral Staircase for outside deck

I am in dire need of some help. My contractor just informed me that we are going to be in need of a spiral staircase from the upper to the lower deck. I am looking for a good brand that will last and not wobble or flex when used. I am looking at galvanized ?steel?...or any other material that will hold up to the elements. I am going to also be adding wood treads to this set-up...

One outfit you dont want to use if you go with a Kit>>the iron shop.comI found a local welder shop that makes them in one peice,welded steel delivered with one coat black primer I put on two coats of finish after install. Much better quality way lower cost. John

@John Hyatt - I'm currently shopping for one myself and considering the Iron Shop (Trexspiralstairs.com) - it's the same entity. After you review, I'm reconsidering. Would greatly appreciate your advice and any pics you have as well. How may I find an excellent welder who builds spiral stairs in my area (Northern VA) as you indicated this is the way to go? Thank you!

I've been using a stair system called EZ Stairs which is easy to install and strong-solid. It's probably one of the most cost effective ways to build deck stairs that I've ever used. A versatile handyman could even put them together for you. It cuts my labor cost in half and I save on materials too. It's worth checking out. The best way to find out is to go to your local building department and ask your inspector. S/he will make the final call in any event, but will also be the most knowledgable with respect to the local code requirements.

Stairs for rooftop deck

If you have regular stairs, you need to have a shed on the roof for them to emerge into, with a regular upright door for exiting to the deck. (doesn't have to be glass or as large as this example.) I think I've seen old houses where the stairwell ends in a sort of large trap door in the ceiling, which then opens to the roof, but I'm not sure those would pass code anymore.

The answer depends entirely on the applicable building code and local amendments so it would help to reveal that information up front; that would help avoid such a wide range of opinions and guessing If the code is the 2015 IRC, R311.7.10.1 describes how a spiral stair can serve as an egress inside and outside of the house. The clear width at and below the handrail must be a min. of 26" and the walk line radius should not be greater than 24.5". Min tread = 6.75"; max riser = 9.5". Min headrooms = 6-6. I suspect the applicable code is different or amended because it apparently limits the area served by a spiral stair to 250 s.f. but in your case that doesn't seem to be a limtation. Are you skeptical of your architect's judgement? He/she at least knows what the applicable code is and no one here does.

I’ve had one stair from the iron shop and the ordering process was a breeze, the installation was as expected, and it looks great a decade later. My neighbors bought the same stair after me.

Yes the iron shop sends you a kit. So you or someone has to assemble. Lots of finnicky little pieces but straightforward. .
