Cabinet Door Style Pictures - Opinions Please

Hello - We are having custom cabinets made and I need to give my cabinet maker a picture of a cabinet door that we like. We have a 1906 house with a very, very small kitchen - only one wall for everything. We do not have room to expand due to load bearing walls. We are thinking of Shaker doors, but I did not realize that there are many types of shaker doors. I also saw a post where someone did a gradual incline to the inset door for dust reasons. Any pictures and or opinions would be most helpful. I love all of the posts on this website as they have been most helpful. Thank you so much.

Have you checked the Finished Kitchens Blog (FKB)? It has pictures of many kitchens from members of GardenWeb. You can use the FKB Categories page to look at kitchens with shaker-style cabinets. In the "Kitchen Basics" section (1st section), there's a "Kitchen style" subsection....with an entry for "shaker".

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I'm unable to see most of the cabinets up close in the finished kitchen pics. I will keep searching this web. I have to e-mail a picture tonight. If anyone has a shaker cabinets with a slight incline that you would like to share I would be most grateful.

Yes, you most definitely can do frameless, full overlay, with a raised panel. Ccoombs1 kitchen, pictured above, is exactly that (forgive me for speaking up on your behalf, ccoombs, and correct me if I'm mistaken). Her cabinets were made by a local cabinetmaker for a great price, less than Ikea, I believe. Also check out poorowner's kitchen (in progress here on the boards, not posted in the FKB yet). He is using Ikea Liljestaad. For sources, I would check out Ikea (though if it is more than an hour away, there will certainly be a hassle factor to the project), local cabinet shops, and Scherr's RTA. Nomorebluekitchen also has beautiful frameless cabs in a transitional style-- don't remember the source, but she is very happy with them. If you can manage to download the Ikea planning software, you can work out what your cabinets would cost through Ikea, and use that for comparison with other sources.

White Brookhaven Cabinets, please help choose color/door style

I also have the Edgemont door style in white -- mine is Nordic. I had custom painted white cabinets before, and I hated how the oil based paint had turned dingy yellow beige, so I wanted a true, clean white. I also have a lot of warmer tones in adjoining rooms, so I didn't want to go with a cool undertone. I like the crisp white. I also like the Edgemont door style. There is -- or at least at the time was -- one door style in Brookhaven that is less that Edgemont. I think that is the Andover. Chatham is a Woodmode door style -- although it appears to be a simpler style, the Woodmode line is going to run more. I personally prefer the softer line and little bit of detail in the Edgemont -- you make like the sharper edges of the Chatham (more rustic or more contemporary leanings). I think that decision would be based on the look you are going for and possibly your budget. Either one is going to be a good choice.

Thanks again for the responses. Right now I am having trouble deciding. I will try the mock up tonight and see if that will help. Good idea. I have done drawings on graph paper and when I look at them I think that I slightly favor the look of the two doors bacause of the symetry. Holligator - Your door does not look big but I am worried that mine will actually be close to 22 inches because the cabinet is 24 inches wide. Love your cabinets by the way. Looking at literature I have from kraftmaid, shuller and diamond it seems that fewer companies make one door cabinets larger than 21 inches. Mine will be 24. Does anyone have a 24 inch cabinet with one door that they would be willing to post a picture of? Or a picture of a 24 inch cabinet with two doors? Just a thought. Thanks, Beth

I don't remember whose cabinets these are, but they're a style called "beaded inset" shaker, I believe. If you google for beaded inset and shaker, you might find some useful close-ups?

I was going to get regular Shaker until I read about the dust thing and so chose this:

If I were you I'd tell the cabinet maker to wait until you have looked at lots of doors and picked the one you really want. Cabinet design is probably the most important decision you'll make in the design of your kitchen. Don't let anyone rush you.

My cabinet designer and I came up with a design just a few days ago - they are doing a mock up for me, and I'll see it on Tuesday. Basically it's got a slight lip, then a 45 degree bevel, which sounds a lot like what you are describing. If I remember I'll post a pic.

willis and circuspeanut, thank you soo much!! I really like the one from crown point. I think our cabinets will be full overlay, but I still think that would give the cabinet maker the idea. I'm very interested in seeing your picture willis13. I'm having a hard time describing what I would like without the benefit of seeing cabinets in person so the pictures are great!!

Just to note that given your cabinet maker, you may need to pay more to get the bead - plus it may collect more spills, etc...

Thanks weneedakitchen. I don't think we're going to get the bead, but just the beveled edge instead of the square flat edge. Not sure I'm explaining that correctly, but more like the crownpoint cabinets above. I'm not sure I could handle our cabinets costing anymore than they do, so hopefully the beveled edge won't cost more....

Would someone please explain exactly what the dust issue is with the Shaker cabinets? I'm somewhat confused, since a lot of cabinetry has nooks and crannies where dust could collect and I'm not sure why this type specifically is being pulled out as worse than others (I'm leaning towards this style myself). Thanks.
