Is there a forum about FENCES?

I don't seem to see one. Is there one? Or would this be the best forum to discuss a property line fence? Thanks!

My main garden is out in the boonies too, and if I couldn't keep the deer out, it wouldn't be worth the effort. For me, the best answer was T-posts, and an electric fence. The posts are 7 1/2 feet long, driven in every 10 feet. The same posts do double duty for my trellises, one of which (with Bitter Melon) you can see behind the fence. They are very easy to install, with no digging, if you buy or borrow a fence pole driver. The wires are only about 5 feet high, but if I get the fence up early (I take 2 sides down in Fall for tilling), the deer get bit once & never try again. If a bold deer figures out it can jump the fence (which occasionally happens) then I run a string across the tops of the poles, hang flags & pie tins from it, and the deer seldom tries again. The electric keeps raccoons out of my corn, too, and seems to be effective against wood chucks. Had to modify the setup a little, after rabbits (actually, one really fat rabbit) completely destroyed several crops. They just hop between the wires. So now there is 24" of rabbit fence on the bottom. At home, I used metal fencing, instead of the electric... again with 24" of rabbit fence at the base.

Question about staining Port Orford Cedar fence

Thanks, I will try to sand a scrap to see if it will take. The ipe is going to be 116 and the cedar 103 assuming it takes the stain, it makes a nice contrast with the color of bamboo. It might just have to go au naturelle for a while. I think we should do OK then. I went back to Angie's List and found several companies with a lot of great reviews, many of whom have done work in my town (somehow I had missed some of these in my first search). I have THREE more I want to call now!! Thanks for the responses. I know if we go with a company that cuts on-site my NDN will be concerned, but if I can reassure her that I have vetted them thoroughly maybe that will help. I think she is sad to see the fence go, but one portion of it (not by her yard) blew apart/down in a storm, both gates have fallen apart, and the boards themselves are wearing. I love an old weathered fence, but it's time for it to go.

I have kind of forgotten what my original question was! Haha!

Well, there is just one side of our property (a 100x100 ft. lot) that needs to be fenced in. I have been wondering what kind of fence to put there.

Price is an issue, since I have already spent my tax refund from this year. :) Today a fence guy came out and gave me a few different estimates for a few different ways of doing a fence.

The way that makes the most sense is to do it like the rest of the yard and do a 4' tall chain link fence. It would span about 75' feet and would totally fence in the yard. We don't have any dogs to keep in, but it would keep dogs out.

So the quote he gave for fence and installation for that 75' of chain link was $725. I don't even want to ask my neighbor if he wants to split the price because he doesn't have any money at this time. Heck, neither do I. :) Maybe if that "economic stimulus" check comes. :)

Thtat seems super reasonable to me! I am also looking for opinions on fencing. I will post a new thread with my question.

Katy, how much does appearance count in your decision? I was thinking about installing a fence behind my house to keep certain unleashed dogs out of my garden. It seems that a chain link fence would be effective, but I tend to like those white painted wood or vinyl fences made of a kind of beaded board and topped with lattice. Then I see a wrought iron fence and want one of those. I'm also curious about how any of these options will impact the value of my home.
